Scared or maybe not...

Clair's PoV

I stabbed the guardian where its heart would have been if it was a human. Then with a 'poof', it disappeared as if dropped its heart.

Tears rolled down my eyes. Finally... finally I succeeded. From noon till evening all I have been trying to do is hunt one of these guardians but to no avail. But, finally, I have killed one! I took its heart and put it into my mouth. Although these are tasteless but for some reason, it felt as if this was the tastiest thing I have ever eaten in my life I savored it. I haven't eaten anything since dawn. If things had continued any longer I would have fainted from hunger.

*clap* *clap*

I glanced to my side. There he was smiling like a devil!

"Congrats! You did it" Steve said as he beamed. He looked happy for some reason. Does my suffering deliver you pleasure?

He approached me and took my hand. What is this situation? For some reason, it feels strangely odd. Is he going to propose to me or something?

'Well I am a human and he is devil incarnation so we cannot marry cause of racial disparity was thought I thought.

But I immediately brushed off my thoughts. 'What are you doing Clair? Don't act like him now.' Seriously this man is a bad influence for me, I am turning into more of a clown the more time I spend with him.

Steve took my palm and placed some of those 'peals' on it. I checked to find three purple hearts.

"Keep them as a gift from him. Only one of them won't be able to satiate your hunger. But remember it's a one-time offer. You won't receive such kindness tomorrow"

This guy! He has killed a few dozen if not hundreds of those monsters and yet... yet he... forget it what was I even expecting from a devil. Even though he had killed so many of them he is still standing unscathed whereas my clothes are all rugged. I am doubtful as to how I am still alive.

I gulped those hearts in one go. Finally feeling full.

"Okay, it's high time we should go to get some rest or else we won't be able to fight tomorrow"

"Umm that is we can't yet"

"Hmm?" Steve saw with me with a questioning look in his eyes.

"Look, I thought that with your strength we would have crossed the forest within a day. But that didn't happen cause a certain someone made me hunt guardians the whole day" I said, "If we had come out of the forest we would have found an inn or two but now it is too dangerous if you fall asleep in the middle of this wilderness"

"Well you don't have to worry about me instead you should worry about yourself" he shrugged, "Those Drus, I am sensitive to their killing intent you know, I can easily predict when they are coming for me even in my sleep"

"But then... but then what would I do?"

"You fend them off yourself, however as I promised I would but in if there is any chance of receiving any fatal injury" Steve nodded, "So don't worry"

I was at a loss for words. Indeed I wanted him to kill all these beasts not wanting myself to get into any of the killings. That was the plan but I can't tell him now. I thought he would have escorted me but he had different thoughts. For some stupid reason, he wanted me to grow. Not sure whether I should be happy or angry with that. But all this is taking too much of a toll on me.

I saw him as he walked away to a nearby tree and began climbing it. In no time he reached the zenith and lied down on one of the sturdy purple branches.

Seeing him sleep a memory surfaced in my mind. It was not too old, but a fresh memory. Something which happened last night. Although, I say memory it was nothing more than me laying on my bed fantasizing about the freedom I was about to gain.

How blissful would it have been? Doing what you like and not being oppressed by others? Maybe I will finally build an abode of mine. The place of my dreams. As I will come out to the balcony gazing upon the beautiful setting sun, a fresh breeze passes by blowing away all my tiredness and worries. Maybe I would have a small kitchen where I will cook just for myself. Maybe I would have a neighbor or two and we will laugh while wiping my tears. Maybe with Steve, I could travel the mysterious world. Gaze upon beautiful landscapes that stretch far and wide. My heart singing out aloud and my mind following in chorus. And while singing my melodies maybe I could find what I truly love. Maybe as I and Steve get closer with the passing days we could...

That last thought caused Clair to blush.

'If only he cherished me more then maybe I would...' was what Clair thought but eventually sighed. She was gradually becoming aware of her feelings the more time both of them spent alone but she was clueless as to what she should do.

Screech!

At the far distance, a crying noise was heard causing Clair to jolt back to reality. She knew too well what that sound meant. Not wasting her breath anymore she approached a nearby and began climbing it.
