039 Surprise Of The Awoken

PPPIIIIINNNNGG

I awoke to the annoying ring of the system. Somehow it managed to send a notice. This was strange as usually I needed to accomplish something significant in order for this to happen.

With bizarre, half asleep curiosity and completely against my will, I opened the system menu.

[Pet "SB" Has Acquired New Skills]

[Pet "SB" Is Ready For Evolution]

[Go To Pet Menu To Continue]

Instantly at the sight of those messages I jumped up fully awake. Ven who has been resting on my lap, hit the ground with a loud thud.

I immediately tensed having forgotten that she was there.

MMMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHH

Outside of a loud moan she did nothing. Ventus laid on the ground still asleep and recovering.

Letting go of the sudden stress I started pacing about as I reread the messages. After confirming that they indeed were real, I turned to SB expecting him to explain what this was about.

"SB! What happened!? How did you-When did you-I don't understand!"

I began to stare him down as I vigorously demanded answers. At least that was the original goal.

Unfortunately it had been instantly shattered and rendered fruitless the second I noticed a massive monster carcass stuck to the wall!

It's blood and entrails had decorated the nook we were hiding in almost in its entirety.

Simply in a total state of shock, I turned my attention back towards SB urging him to explain the situation I had woken up to.

SB who had been snuggled against me before I jumped away, simply looked up from the ground. With those black void eyes of his, he all too happily, began to regale me with a story of his perilous adventure.

Bloop Bloop Bloop Bloop Bloop

Bloop Bloop Bloop Bloop

Bloop Bloop Bloop

Bloop Bloop Bloop Bloop Bloop Blooooop

BLOOOOOOOOP

Bloop

I simply stared back at him jaw dropped. Clearly he had the answers I needed in his encoded message. Cursing myself for my inability to speak slime, I continued pacing.

Now I would never know what happened during my time asleep.

All this took a couple of moments to digest. Having chosen to accept the reality I woke up to, I simply shook my head and picked him up.

"I don't know what you said SB, but it's clear you protected us."

Bloop Bloop

I gave him a smile.

"Thanks for looking out for us."

Bloop Bloop Bloop

He wiggled his jelly body in my hands. Clearly happy.

"Come on buddy, let's get ready to go. I'll deal with the system notices involving you in just a bit."

Bloop Bloop

He activated his [Everlasting] skill and melted away in a protective covering over me. I walked towards Ven, covering the short distance I had created between us. The stone I had set on fire earlier was still gently blazing on as I passed it.

Arriving at her head, I knelt down, placed my hand on her shoulder and began shaking her. Ventus moaned for a bit before she turned over. This just made me smile.

Getting to see a different side of her. A lazy side.

At the same time, she was making this too easy by not waking up at the slightest movement.

She continued twisting and turning. Even contorting her body at times simply to avoid the call back from the sweet oblivion of rest and into the depraved reality we faced.

It went on like this for a while. I could feel myself getting annoyed because she was not waking up. It was during this time that only a single thought crossed my mind.

This experience will be a great addition to my arsenal when I decide to tease her later regarding her sleeping habits.

I let loose a diabolical laugh in my mind.

I kept stirring her, willing for her to wake up. Every attempt ended the same. With her fighting against me to continue to sleep. I had not realized she was this deep of a sleeper.

What can I do to wake her up?

I began to brainstorm as I walked about in this section of the cave.

Scream loudly in her ear?

Throw a rock at her?

Throw SB at her?

Eventually my foot hit a metallic item. Looking down I instantly recognized what it was.

Picking it up, I began to talk to Ven in a very syrupy covered voice.

"Oh Ven, do you want to wake up?"

"Askidpwdbiqlqndudjwmmmmm"

"I see and I am sorry you feel that way but it's now time to wake up."

Relentlessly I tipped over the pitcher of infinite water and let it pour out on Ventus.

Ice cold resplendent water began to pour itself out and land on her. The instant shock of the temperature difference roused her in less than a second.

She jumped up soaking wet and jaw dropped in disbelief that I just did that.

"Em! Why would you do that!?"

"Because you weren't waking up?"

"Just rub the back of my ear if you want to wake me! Everyone knows elves are deep sleepers!"

"...I didn't."

"Ughhhhh!"

Obviously annoyed at being awoken in such a way, Ventus made her way to the fire and began to dry herself off.

I simply laughed. I tried to get her to see my reason but, she refused to speak with me.

"Alright let me know when you're ready to go."

"Shut up! Jerk!"

I turned away from her. While her anger began to fade, I decided to attend to other matters.

"SB?"

Bloop

He disengaged his [Everlasting] skill and was now once again a cute slime ball of death.

"Let's see what the system has to say about you."

Opening up the system menu, I swiftly made it to the pet section and began looking at the information.

[Pet SB Ready For Evolution. Proceed?]

I looked away from the display and just stares at SB with the most dumbfounded and confused look ever known to exist.

"When did you get an additional skill?"

Bloop Bloop Bloop Bloo-

I shook my hand to stop him.

"You know I can't speak slime. I'll just assume it had something to do with that monster on the wall."

I pointed to the now stinking remains of a perverted life form.

He happily jumped up and down at my remark. I guess I was right?

Bloooop

Looking back at the menu I decided to start with the last task.

[Pet SB Ready For Evolution. Proceed?]

[Yes]

I confirmed and SB began to evolve yet again.

Much like before he started to float up in the air as a brilliant flash of light coming from inside him illuminated us. Noticing the spectacle that was occurring, Ventus had stopped sulking by the fire and walked next to me.

"How is he evolving again?"

"I don't know. I already asked him and I couldn't understand slime. If I had to guess I'm sure it has something to do with that monster plastered on the wall."

I pointed to the carcass.

"When did that happen!?"

"No clue, I was resting next to you."

Ventus began to blush hard. The light coming from SB's evolution only made it that much more visible.

"Relax nothing weird happened. I'm not Otto you know."

I gave her a heartfelt grin. Accepting it she started to behave normally again.

The light display seemed to go on and on forever. SB sang out a chorus of melodic-

Bloop bloop

As he continued to endure. Eventually the glow from within faded and he began floating down back to the ground.

PPPIIIIINNNNGG

[Evolution Successful]

Ventus and I laid our eyes on the new and improved SB. To no one's surprised, he looked exactly the same. Well no. That wouldn't be correct. I mean his physical appearance was the same but he gave off some sort of strange glow.

"SB how do you feel?"

BLOOP BLOOP

Ventus and I both jumped back started! His voice had dropped down at least ten octaves! It was so deep I felt my chest vibrating.

With incredulous disbelief I opened up the system in hopes of any answer.

When enraged, Skill is activated. Engulfing "SB" in its own life energy, his offensive and defensive capabilities are greatly multiplied.

[Sacred Judgement]

By calling upon his now connection with the Divine, "SB" can summon an array of calamities on those he deems enemies.

I had no words. This slime is going to be the death of me I know it.

"SB, why are you so strong?"

He began to respond once again in a shockingly deep tone.

BLOOP BLOO-

"No!!!! Go back to your cute voice! This is too scary!"

Ventus just snickered. I flashed her a gaze full of contempt. She simply brushed it off.

Turning back towards SB he seemed to understand and followed through.

Bloop

"Thank you buddy that's much better."

Relief flooded my heart. This was too much.

Now that everything was in sorted out I gave the command to head out. SB had reengaged his [Everlasting] skill and Ventus walked side by side with me as we followed the twisting path leading back to the flat cave area.

I shined the flame from my ring brighter to illuminate the putrid darkness of the cave. We finally made it to the flat portion and disbelief flooded both Ventus and myself

Thousands of monster corpses laid everywhere. Limbs, entrails, and their atrocious blood smeared everywhere. The scene painted a perfect picture of death.

I was about to confront SB about all this but from the corner of my eye, I noticed movement.

By throwing the flame above my hand to that area, darkness was absolved. Hidden within the veil, were three soldiers. Dressed head to toe in wicked looking armor. Swords in hand, they raised them in preparation.

"Em—"

"I know. They're here." I responded with a serious tone.

One of the soldiers spoke.

"Quick! Fe'ni go report to Nniuq and the others, we finally found the traitor and his companion! We will hold them off here until the entire army arrives! Go!"

At the last word, one of the three figures dashed away.

My eyes met the voice that had spoken and he continued.

"Prepare to die! You poisonous vermin!"

He held his sword high up.

I simply looked at Ven and smiled.

"Are you going to help me this time or are you going to stay off sides like last time."

She rolled her eyes and gave me a mocking laugh.

"Just try and keep up."
