Past Meets Present

Richard took a thoughtful puff of his cigar, the smoke curling into the air between them. "If you need anything, you know how to reach me." His offer was straightforward, delivered with a formality that understood her preference for handling matters on her terms.

Lena nodded, although her expression didn't change; a hint of softness appeared at the edge of her eyes, acknowledging her appreciation at his offer. " I think it would be better if you could stay here for the time being and keep an eye on Samuel."

"Of course," Richard agreed, his tone shifting to a dutiful one. "Even without your request, as the person picked to be his 'brother', it would seem as though I expected to be here until everything is wrapped up." The edge at the back of his voice gave away that although he knew what needed to be done, it didn't mean he was entirely thrilled about having to do it.
