Chapter 3

Suddenly, I was awoken, my parents shook me vigorously as my sister shouted for them to hurry so we could all get out. I'm wondering what is wrong for her voice to be so worrisome like that. Why are my parents shaking me like this? There is a window right next to my bed, so I glance out of it and I notice that day time has still yet to arrive. I hear a loud screech just outside my window. I jerk my head to follow the sound and notice buildings that have been set alight. Without hesitation, I wake myself up, my father picks me up as fast as he can and we sprint out of the house as fast as we can. My father kicks down the door and doesn't care for anything other than his family as we escape the now burning building.

I see dragons, three of them. Dragons are attacking us, but why? I heard about dragons in a book that I had read, but it was said that they were noble creatures and would only attack places within reason or had to take vengeance for their kin. They were supposedly extinct years ago when all of the kingdoms joined forces out of fear. The power the dragons held was magnificent. Their proficiency in magic was three-fold of that of an average human. Not to mention their gargantuan strength that could lift a carriage with two horses with ease.

Why are they attacking my village?

This is the question that consumed my brain. The people in my village were most likely the friendliest people you would ever meet in your lives. Everyone was just so kind to each other. If someone asked for help with something no one would hesitate to say no. People even dropped what they were doing in the first place to help anyone, it was an amazing community.

We kept running and running, I noticed that there were lots of other people from our village that were able to escape ahead of us, which relieved some of my stress. I hope everyone is safe and that they were all able to get out fast enough.

We gather with a group of the other villagers that were also able to make it out. One of them mentioned how they saw one of the families going into their underground safety bunker which most of the village houses had. Unfortunately, at this moment in time that might not have been the smartest decision as they were now trapped. They all decided they would try to save the family with the best of their abilities. My father and a few other adventurers decided that they wanted to go back and go rescue the family. People were hesitant to let them go as they didn't want any more people to die but they ended up reluctantly agreeing.

We all watched them run back towards the village with the bravery and courage that many others would never be able to muster up in their whole lives. We were sheltered under a cave as staying hidden in the trees and forest might not have been good enough. Parents were holding their children tightly as they bawled their eyes out. You couldn't blame them, they had all just seen their houses being burnt down. Even some of the older children were shedding a tear as they understood what dragons were and what some of their parents had gone and risked their lives for.

My mother was holding me while she tried her best to remain calm in front of me and my sister who decided she wanted to stay with everyone to make sure we were all safe. I could tell that my father going to fight had taken a toll on my mother as I could feel her shaking her leg up and down , in worry that he may not return. I understood though, within the year of me knowing who he is I have come to love him as the father that he is. That goes for my mother as well. They are both amazing parents, I can always feel the love emanating from them as they look at me in my eyes, and I love them just as equally, but being at this young of an age I can't do anything to show them that. Well except for trying to foil myself less, I guess. It's always really embarrassing when I do that because I'm used to being able to go to the toilet by myself and keep my private stuff ,well you know, private.

We hear a loud bang in the distance meaning that the manipulators, that went save the family, had begun the fight against the dragons. Around 6 manipulators went to go and save the family, and with the strength and magical ability of 1 dragon I didn't really have much hope for some of the people that went. However, I did hear that my father was one of the stronger adventurers that were around. I believe he was Rank A+ was considered to be on the stronger side of the spectrum with only two more ranks above that.

All we can hear at this point is loud bangs and crashes from the fight between the adventurers and dragons. It's been going on for ages now. Most people have stopped crying but only because they were able to calm down after they got used to what was happening or their tears just ran dry and there were no more tears that could possibly be shed.

In the distance we see something running toward the entrance of the cave. It's too small to be a human and there is no way a dragon could be that small. My sister swoops in and stand at the entrance of the cave to stop the mysterious shadow from getting any closer to people. It got closer and closer, the anticipation was too much, and my sister just stepped forward to see what it was. She suddenly got clobbered in the arm by a massive club. It was a goblin; a goblin was coming to attack everyone in the cave. Unfortunately for the goblin, my sister ain't no sissy, she stands back up after just a couple of seconds and wipes herself down.

"Well, I didn't expect a goblin to be here in all of this chaos." She said as a small chuckle resounds through cave, giving the rest of us the shivers. At the same time, unsheathing the small daggers from her sides.

My sister was an assassin and with all the practice she had been doing from the age of 8 she was a strong one at that. She leaps toward the goblin and slashes horizontally, aiming for the neck of the wretched monster. The goblin had no chance against my sister, she was only 1 rank beneath my father and that was Rank A. It was lucky that she was here as no one would've been able to see that it was a goblin until it was too late without her.

As my sister turns around there was something else running towards the shelter but this time it was a human. It was our neighbours' father, he was one of the people who went to go fight the dragons and save the family, what's he doing back here?

"We need help, the dragons are overpowering us, and Anne it's your husband Tom, h-h-he is dead!" the father says as he wants to get his breath back.

I can see my mother's face go pale in an instant. My sister hears this, and she doesn't know how to react to this. She just stands there with a straight face on, emotionless. She isn't able to comprehend what she had just heard; she grabs the neighbour and shakes him saying he is lying and that our father isn't dead as tears end up falling out and she falls to her knees. She puts her hands to her face and just sobs and lets out a waterfall of tears.

I couldn't believe it. The dragons killed my father, the father that I had loved. The father that I had an actual relationship with compared to my last life. It was hard but I had to keep my emotions under wraps as I am still only a 1-year-old who shouldn't be able understand what death is yet.

My family has just been broken, but not in the way I had thought.
