Coughing Blood

"BACK OFF! WE'VE WON!"

The screams of victory echoed on the deck, piercing Serenica through her skull.

She realized she would have to stitch up many men, and Indigo was dead.

Dead.

Spade was weeping over her now lifeless body,

This was the first time Serenica saw him like this, so utterly devastated that he could not speak or even look at her.

She knelt down next to him as the last enemies jumped overboard, and she saw the first mate do the same.

They put their hands on Spade's back, without trying to pull him away from the dead woman.

He seemed to appreciate that.

The healer wondered if Indigo had symbolized something to him, like Helen had been a symbol of innocence for Serenica. The king-captain mourned the woman like concepts were mourned, not as a person or a secret lover, but the things he said once he could express himself again revealed a deep appreciation.
