CHAPTER 1

Avery's POV

"No no and NO"

Nikki said giving me one of her 'try me' glares.

"Geez Nikki, calm down. It's just sodium bicarbonate in water."

"And so. I said I'm not drinking that" she said eyeing the poor glass that looked like it was about to break just with her glare.

Actually, this my best friend Nikeeta Rhee. She was Hindu but converted to Christianity.

And she had a gastric attack an hour ago and refuses categorically to take her medicine.

I mean how ironic is it for a doctor to refuse taking medicine. Doctors really are the worst patients.

"Ok Nikki. As you wish but then..."

I eyed her innocently and shrugged.

"I'll be obliged to have some small talk with your mother about your little escapades with Sam..."

In a minute she was In front of me gulping down her glass of medecine.

"Damn it. You're good at threats. No wonder you became this successful"

"And you you're good at whining. No wonder you became successful. I retorted.

Nikki is a doctor and she's 25 just like me. She took over her family's chain of hospitals a year ago and she's doing great.

I on the other hand indulged in business and management. I proudly own one of the biggest shipping companies in New York .

A woman shipping magnate. Impressive I know.

"Hey girls. I brought cookies and milk" Nikki's mom said as she came into the room.

Milk. She said milk.

Oh gosh. I LOVE MILK.

I turned, more like jumped in her way to take the glass of milk. (Or to snatch it.)

"Manners miss" she told me sternly but I was too occupied stuffing my mouth with cookies.

"I see you finally drank your medicine Nikeeta. Thank you once again my dear Avery."

"One day you'll have to give me all your tips on how you make this girl drink her medicine" she finished with a sigh.

I just smiled. If only she knew.

Meet Mme Edna Rhee, Nikki's mom. She is sweet and caring but adamant to the fact that her children marry people of their social status.

I know it's quite a bipolar attitude but what can we do. We all love her like that especially after what happened...

Nikki here actually is madly in love,... with their gardener, Samuel Royce.

Her mother will strangle her if she came to know of this.

"I'm home" I shouted loud enough because I didn't wanna surprise my father making out with his mistress on the couch.

Welcome to my shitty family.

When I was younger I used to have the dream life.

My parents were rich and always gave me all I wanted.

Things changed when I was 14. My mother decided to adopt another daughter since I kept complaining on how lonely I was.

So on my birthday, I was presented to my new sister, Dei. She was 16 by then.

I was so happy but my life turned up side down as Dei wasn't who she appeared to be.

In front of my parents she would act all saint but when we were alone she would torture me mentally and sometimes physically.

Me being me wouldn't retaliate what she did because that would have simply changed who I was.

I thought she would just stop there but the worst of the worst happened on my 18th birthday.

My mother died seven years ago, when I was 18.

She caught my father sleeping with his mistress on the bed they shared for 20 years.

Guess who was the mistress,

My dear Dei.

My father told her in the face that she had become too old and fat for him and he now preferred slim women with big boobs and butts.

He then said if she wasn't happy with it, she was free to leave the house and take her bastard child (which was referring to me).

He came then and locked the door at her face and shortly after noises could be heard which meant they resumed their activities like nothing happened.

My mother on the other hand took off in her car and that was the last time I saw her. I only got news she had a terrible accident and couldn't make it.

They never even found her body.

I remember feeling devastated. I also remembered how my father married Dei one week after my mother's funeral.

My father paid for my school fees at Harvard and sent me there. I didn't see him until I had my masters two years ago. And now that I am a sucessful business woman, he says

I have to repay all the money he used uselessly on my education.

And so I did. I paid him all the money he used on my education and I came to leave the cheque.

As I entered the dining room, I saw them feeding each other.

How disgusting.

I placed the cheque on the table and turned to leave not acknowledging any of them.

"Wait" came my father's gruff voice from behind me.

I turned looking towards him with an irritated expression.

"What do you want?"

"Go wait for us in the study" he ordered.

Wait. Was he ordering me?

He was my father but all the respect flew out the window 7 years ago...... on my birthday.

"Sir. As you may know I am a very busy woman who does not have time to accord to people like you two so have a nice day"

"You ungrateful bitch. Is that how you talk to your father after all he has done for you?" Came Dei's venomous tone.

I turned and smiled at her sweetly. " I do not have time to accord to people like you either. Have a nice day lovebirds " I said walking out.

"You young woman are getting married next week." He said and my heart stopped beating in my chest.
