Who?

Nathan's POV

The sun was at its peak, I was eating lunch and doing homework on my balcony was my mom walked in. she was in her uniform, I was surprised since every time she headed for work she usually didn’t enter my room.

“Nathan” She said as she sat down

“Yes?” I asked

“How is it with Aure?”

“It’s been great, we’ve been texting and hanging out”

“That great,” She said sounding reassured

“Why’d you ask?”

“His mother passed Nathan, I asked Harrison about it”

I stayed silent

“But it’s great that he is happy”

“What else?”

“That’s everything I know, Harrison was in a hurry” She raised her arms to look at her watch ‘It’s almost time I have to go” She stood up and exited the room.

I sat in silence again and thought of what she said, I was aware of what happened but I never asked if he was okay. Our friendship was something I thought I would never have again when Aure moved away I never got to say goodbye or even see him again. Over the weeks of texting him, he said that he never really remembered anything about me, the only time he does is when I send him pictures and we have the same things to say, It was like he had amnesia.

I managed to finish all my homework, so a strolled downstairs for dinner. My mom was setting the table and my dad was watching tv. Dinner went swiftly and I was back in my room with nothing to do until my phone started ringing. It was Emily

“Hello”

“Hello Nathan, I was wondering if you wanted to go with me to the mall tomorrow, it’s my sisters birthday and it’s probably really boring”

“If I’m not busy”

“Thank you so much Nathan bye”

“Bye have a goodnight”

Emily was ordering food for her sister and her friends as I waited in silence, they were talking about the new cute boy in school. After minutes of waiting, she brought a tray filled with food, fried chicken, fries, and drinks, a typical meal for kids. We sat at a different table at the request of her sister.

“How have you been Nathan?”

“I’m okay, I guess”

She hummed and we started eating. The restaurant had only a few people and the only ones you could hear were Emily’s sister and friends.

“Nat,” I raised my head

“Yeah?”

“Who was that boy you were hanging out with?”

“Which one?”

“The transferee”

“You mean Aure?”

“Aure?”

She paused “How did you meet?”

“I actually talked about him to you once”

“Really?’

“His name is Kyle but he prefers Aure”

“Kyle, as in Wilson?”

“Yeah, he was my friend before they moved”

“Why did he move?”

‘I’m not sure” I bit my lip “Why’d you ask?”

“Just curious”

We continued to talk after her sister wanted to go explore the mall. We followed them around and even went exploring ourselves.

“Hey Nat”

“Yes?” I answered I was busy paying for ice cream.

“Is that Kyle?” She pointed at Aure exiting the clothing department holding paper bags with Asher behind him. “And Asher, are they friends? Or on a date?”

“No, they are just lab partners”

“They seem to be more than lab partners” She snickered

“He’s just really friendly”

“Maybe,” She said walking away “Come on let’s go”

I was back in my room hours later, before I did we waited for her sister to be picked up and her friends and watched a movie. It was fun but my mind kept wondering about Aure, since when was he that close with Asher to the point of going shopping with him? And why Asher of all people?. He’s is egocentric and fake but he hides it well. Aure shouldn’t be friends with him.

He deserves better
