Lies

Maisie Smith was waiting for us at the door of the building, looking serious and unfriendly. She separated me from the rest of the group and took me to a separate room where no one could hear us.

She made me sit down. She paced nervously around the room, as if I wasn't on the verge of a panic attack too.

"Do you know anything about the killer?"

"No, ma'am."

"Please don't tell me that! How do I explain to my superiors that we have a dead body in one of the cupboards?"

"Let me examine it."

"You're not even a doctor!"

"Actually, boss, I am a doctor."

"Impossible. You would outrank me."

Oh, that explained a lot.

"Let me see the body, please, boss."

"I will consult the Ambassador."

She spent some time talking to her on the phone. She was smart, she had the call volume turned down to the minimum. I couldn't hear what she was saying, but I knew from the look on her face that Hypatia had lied to her about my training.

She hung up and looked me up and down.
