Antonio tried to be a kind master because he was not always a master. As a boy, younger than Jack was now, Antonio watched his family be literally torn apart. The monster in charge had grabbed Antonio and put him in an actual box, taking him to King Drake as a party favor. Halfway there, little Antonio was pulled out and passed around the hunting party. He lost his clothes as the monsters enjoyed their toy and then it was back in the box, this time with food for being a good boy. Instead of pulling him out again, they just opened the box and bowed. King Drake had smiled down at him, fangs on full display but after his ordeal, Antonio was too tired to react. He had been numb since he was first put in the box. Seeing that his gift was worn out, King Drake ordered the vampires' detained and had Antonio taken to join the slaves.
With time, the numbness faded and Drake's interest grew. Antonio did whatever he was told, he was a faithful slave but unfortunately for him, he was also fairly pretty. One of Drake's wives took an interest and Drake mauled her when she attempted to claim the human's virginity, eliciting fear from the silent man. The first emotion Drake had seen from him, the king finished what his wife started. Once he was done, he praised Antonio for being good for him.
The king had him reassigned to his personal service and noticed how he enjoyed watching duels. He made Antonio a deal, the first of three, exchanging combat lessons for sexual favors. Antonio agreed readily and to King Drake's shock, excelled at both things. King Drake was able to shape his pet to suit his tastes, letting him exercise instead of kneeling idly to build muscles, usually without clothes. After his anger had cooled and Antonio became more responsive, he began sharing the human. Unfortunately for them, Antonio was still mostly numb. He never felt anything strongly until inspiration struck the king and he began pitting his human against those turned by accident. The duels were quite entertaining and showcased Antonio's ingenuity, causing King Drake to seriously consider his pet's future.
War broke out and Antonio readily accompanied his master to the battlefield. Many soldiers saw the human as a joke until he used the blade he was allowed to train with and slayed several enemies in battle. King Drake was already protective of him enough that none had even thought of calling him food and seeing how well he performed made the king very disappointed in his troops. They were immortals several times the boy's age and he still did better than them. Antonio had very little ambition that Drake could see.
Not all battles went their way but Antonio was loyal to a fault and Drake rushed to save the overrun human. He offered a second deal, "If I turn you then you must be forever faithful to me."
"Turn me?"
"Into a vampire."
"No."
"No?"
"Not gonna lose again." It took Drake several long moments to piece that together then he was hit with the realization that the boy remembered his origins.
"The only way you can survive this is if I turn you but I don't make a habit of turning any human I grow fond of."
"I know but I can't."
Drake was running out of time so he turned his pet against his will. The newly minted vampire was quick to quench his thirst then glared at Drake, who said, "One day, we will rule all that is and I need you with me when that day comes, be it tomorrow or centuries from now."
The boy offered, "I will stand by you so long as you don't become them, deal?" Drake agreed, striking their second deal. The third deal came during what would be known as the Revolution when a new world order was established, Antonio convinced Drake not to wipe out a problematic species by offering the deal Drake originally offered him on the battlefield, clarifying, "I won't always agree with you but I will no longer make my loyalty conditional." Thus, the world was forever changed.
