Masquerade of Madness: Invoking Fear: Part two

Vincent ignored her, disinterested in their little vignette. He needed to concentrate on something else. He began to approach Monett, whose energy hid something. Monett smiled slyly and again moved aside. This time she revealed what her power had been hiding – it was a Nard in chains, angry and in pain. Vincent frowned.

Creed gasped in shock. He had never seen a Nard before now. There was no way that he could be half of this creature. It stood over six feet tall with massive arms. At the end of his hands were knife-like claws at least six inches long. Thick legs, full of muscle, held clawed feet that pulled on the chains.

The Nard's face held Creed's gaze. The forehead looked like an oddly-shaped helmet with red eyes. The nose was sharp and pointed. The mouth opened a thin set of lips, revealing two layers of jagged teeth. A black paste oozed over the Nard's pale skin on its entire body, as if the skin were excreting. Suddenly, the midsection opened up and spewed out a skeleton. The Nard thrashed and pulled at the chains, but they would not give way.

Horrified, Creed backed up against the wall. His breathing accelerated, too frightened that he was half of that. He threw up his hands to cover his mouth. "There is no way that I am that! There is no way!"

Vincent turned to study his brother's reaction.

Monett smirked and stepped toward Creed. "There certainly is a way you are! I mean there are those who witnessed your mother, including your stepfather, engage in contact with the King of the Nards. Your father was proud of your mother for doing this. And for what, to end a stupid war?"

Creed stood silent, frozen in denial.

"Enough, Monett!" Vincent spoke sharply.

"That's right, Vincent. Protect him, like you could not protect my sister." She spread her wings, their deformity quite clear, the rotting exposed. "It doesn't matter anymore. The council took her away, and now you are all going to die!"

Spike wanted to comfort Creed. She could not bear to see him in pain. She wanted to destroy that woman with the curly brown hair and putrefying wings.

Sizzler continued his attempt to woo Jade, whose only focus was to get away from him.

Monett summoned her monster, speaking his name, "Lance." A weird-looking little creature appeared, dressed in a purple jester's suit from the pointed hat to the curled toes, his white face frozen into a smile.

Spike immediately pointed out, "That is my ex!"

Jade huffed. "This is not the time. Help me out!"

Monett reeled, growing tired of all the ensuing drama. She ordered her monster. "Lance, when Sizzler and I leave, release the Nard upon them and return to me." Then she tossed him a bottle of Eternal Love.

Creed snapped out of his shock. "But he will die like the rest of us."

Lance took one look at Spike, cocking his head sideways. "Some things are worth dying for," he retorted.

Spike responded to his taunt, "I have been named."

"No matter, my master's words are absolute."

Monett tried to vanish, but Vincent seized her arm. "Family is family. You have

betrayed yours. I will forgive you because you are misguided," he said, as he kissed her forehead.

She blinked. "What!" Monett's nose curled. "Sizzler, we need to leave now!"

Lance bowed as his mistress vanished with Sizzler. Once they were clear, he released the Nard.

The Nard immediately swung its massive arm, knocking Lance into a wall and causing the vile of Eternal Love to drop.

"No, not my Eternal Love!" Lance yelled, as he sank down into unconsciousness.

The Nard rushed Vincent, who quickly sidestepped it.

The beast recovered and went for Creed, who was scared stiff and trembling. The Nard roared and hit the wall above Creed's head because a familiar scent had filled his nostrils. He is one of me, the Nard thought. He stopped the attack, yearning to enjoy the smell of his own kind and missing home.
