Celeste inherits a Manhattan apartment from a mysterious great-aunt

Nineteen-year old Celeste, living alone in a small town in Idaho since the death of her grandmother, inherits a Manhattan apartment from an unknown great-aunt. An old lady mysteriously appears in the apartment and tells her she is not who she thinks she is. She overhears the lawyer, who is the executor for her great-aunt's estate, plotting against her and discovers he is in debt to an organized crime boss. She turns for help to Rene, her former boyfriend who had left suddenly without explanation after high school graduation and has now returned to their hometown and finds out why he abandoned her. She is reconciled with Rene and with his help ,and the help of new-found friends, she uncovers the truth about her adoption and the terrible secret hidden in the apartment. The discovery leads her to a new family.
