Chapter 8: The illusion of Trust

"Stop it, Clover!" Lucia screamed, "Let go of me!"

Lucia hit into something with a thump. The grip around her neck was gone. She fell forward, clambering to turn back to see what she had hit. Lucia exhaled uneasily. There was Clover staring back. Lucia came to her feet angrily, she hardly noticed the chains had somehow disappeared.

"Stay back!" Lucia breathed. Her throat was a horse.

Clover's brow furrowed. It was soon replaced by a look of comprehension. Clover held up a hand as if attempting to corral a wild animal.

"Calm yourself," Clover said gently, "Whatever you saw was an illusion,"

Lucia stared back cynically, "That was no illusion. Do you take me for a fool?!"

Clover glanced around anxiously and then back to Lucia apprehensively. Lowering their hands, Clover stared beyond Lucia into the mist.

"Do you hear that?" Clover said in a quiet voice.
