Chapter 2: Raelynn

I am exhausted.

Who wouldn't be after a whole day of training?

My dad's supposed to pick me up any moment from now. I say goodbye to Jack and head towards the gate. The sky is dark with over a million stars as far as I could see. Shock takes over my features when I find my uncle instead of my father at the gate.

"Good evening, Uncle."

"Your dad couldn't make it, I'll be taking you back to them myself." He says and I nod in understanding. "Congratulations, by the way."

"Why?"

"You have a new baby sister." He informs causing me to freeze in my tracks.

A new sister?

I barge into the hospital completely out of breath. Patients and doctors are giving me concerned looks but I ignore them. Walking up to the receptionist, I say, "Mr and Mrs Ferrer, what room are they in?"

"Are you a family member?" She asks with a bored look. How rude!

"We are. And I suggest you change your tone before you end up walking out of here jobless." My uncle's voice startles me, I forgot he is here.

The receptionist's face turns pale immediately, the look on my uncle's face made it obvious he wasn't bluffing. "F-forgive me s-sir. They're in room 109 on the ninth floor."

I rush into the elevator with my uncle behind me. For some reason, it feels like he is becoming uncomfortable. Now that I think of it, whenever he and my dad were together there always seemed to be tension between them. I wonder why.

A smile graces my lips as I walk into their room. But it falls quickly when I notice the look on everyone's face.

"What's wrong?" I ask. I start to panic when I realize the absence of mom and a baby. "Where's mom? Did something happen to her? Where's the baby?"

"They're in another room, don't worry." Dad says.

"Then what's wrong?"

"The baby has feet paralysis."

"What? No. This can't be." I shake my head in disbelief, perhaps the doctors made a mistake. Why would something like this happen?

With a shaky sigh, I walk out of the room. I need to be alone for a while. I am waiting for the elevator to open when a hand engulfs mine.

Ronan.

The smile on his face is innocent and it warmed my heart. He starts leading me somewhere and I follow in confusion. "Where are we going?" Of course there's no answer. But it's okay, I trust him with my life. Plus, I'm a hundred percent sure this hospital is heavily guarded.

He knocks on a door and a muffled come in comes from the other side. Inside the room is my mom with a baby in her arms.

"Mom," my voice is weak. Mom looks so tired, but she still manages to keep a small smile on her face.

"I am guessing your dad told you."

"Yes, I'm so sorry mom. I feel so useless knowing I can't do anything about this." Tears threaten to fall but I wouldn't let them. I'm not a crier.

"Hey, look at me." I do as she says and she continues. "This isn't anyone's fault, the important thing is she is alive and well. We will love her regardless of any state she might be in, is that understood?" I nod in response.

"May I hold her?" I ask and mom smiles at me. She carefully hands her to me and I cradle her in my arms. I gasp when I see the baby's face, she's absolutely gorgeous. She has similar features with mom and Ronan. Her cheeks are pink and chubby, her nose is like a little button, her lips are small and glossy. Her eyes are so tiny, I could barely identify what color they are.

"What's her name?" I ask mom.

"Raelynn." Mom says making my smile grow.

I swear to you little one, I will protect our family no matter what. That is my promise to you.

It's like she read my thoughts, because what Raelynn did next made my love for her grow beyond any understanding.

She smiles at me.
