Numb.
My body and mind felt numb.
Ruby and Ranger grew tense behind me, all eyes were on me and I have absolutely no idea what to do, say or feel. I never did tell them what happened that day. When was I going to tell them our parents are gone? Was I planning on telling them? Did I want to? I guess they had to find out today.
Ronan's lips begin to move but I don't hear a thing. Uncle John seemed to be throwing a tantrum as well but I can't hear him. Why can't I hear anything?
From my peripheral vision, I can see Ranger comforting Ruby as she cried unto his shoulder. My vision becomes blurry but not from tears.
No, this was from something else.
Rage.
The man responsible for my parent's deaths, the very same man responsible for my family's sorrow is here. And I can't do a thing about it because my siblings are here, they're in danger. I have to ensure their safety at all costs. All of them.
My voice is barely a whisper, yet it manages to silence them all, "How do we get out of here?"
"That's what I've been trying to tell you! Didn't you hear--"
"I asked, how do we get out of here." I repeat, the only difference is the sharpness in my stare.
His mouth slams shut but quickly reopens, "I have an escape tunnel right there." He points to an isolated area on the other side of the house, even through squinted eyes, I couldn't see anything other than trees. "We can escape through there, my helicopter and backup will be waiting for us."
"B-but what about Ronan?" Ruby asks, fear evident in her voice.
"No, we have to go!" Uncle John snaps and I nearly roll my eyes. Does he seriously think I would leave my little brother behind? Over my dead body.
"No, I'm going to get Ronan. You guys get to the helicopters and wait for us, if we're not out in five minutes...." I am afraid to say this but, "Then you have to leave us behind."
"What?! Are you crazy?! They'll kill you!" Uncle John snarls in my face which causes my blood to boil. "Listen to me, Roxanna. If they capture Ronan they won't be able to harm him because he is of no use to them. We can always get him back once the rest are safe and we have enough men and ammunition. But if it's you, you're dead on the spot."
There's a moment of silence.Everyone is holding their breath, everything comes down to me and my decision.
"So be it." I deadpan. "I'm not abandoning my brother, not that I expect you to know anything about it."
His eyes become cold, "Five minutes. If you're not out, we're leaving."
"No--" I cut Rolland off, not giving him the chance to speak because I know exactly what he's going to say.
I'm sorry, little brother but we don't have time.
"Very well. At least some of us will make it out of here."
