What's the order?

Work was moving slow in the restaurant I worked in. Mama P had gone out and I was left alone with Alice my co-worker, who did not like my company very much.

I decided to work on my English paper while listening to music. I had done majority of my assignment before I came to work so I was bored as hell and the only thing keeping me from sleeping was the music and the English paper.

The door opened with a loud noise and someone half ran half walked inside panting hard. I immediately shot up from the seat agitated

“can I help you” I started to say but I was greeted with silence he kept looking through the window like he was expecting something to burst through the doors.

I picked up the crow bar under the counter and held it close preparing to bash someone’s head if need be. He finally turned around still panting.

“uh hi” he said between deep breaths

“can I help you” I repeated. I saw a glimpse of confusion take over his features before he answered

“yeah I will have whatever you sell” now it was my turn to be confused.

“food?”

“yeah food, what type do you have?” he said more at ease now.

I pointed to the board that held all of the food we offered. This man obviously did not come here for food he was chased by someone and just entered here to lose the person.

“I will have the rice” he said breaking me out of my thoughts

“uhm, ok Alice Alice could you come please we have a customer” I shouted

I did not want to leave him here to go inside and bring the food and besides that was her job.

“what the order” she shouted right back

“rice”

I watched him from the corner of my eye standing here like he owned the place. I did not offer him a seat he didn’t look like he wanted to anyway. Alice strutted in with a tray placing it on the counter she looked up and her facial expression turned quickly from bored to interested.

“hey handsome, how are you doing” she purred

“woah you are new here aren’t you” she said twisting her hair using her fingers

“I am” he answered curtly

“I must say your specie is very rare in these parts you look like you fell from the sky man” she continued in her full-blown Jamaican accent.

“and that jaw line” she said licking her lips “just perfect”

“can I get that to go” he said completely ignoring her

“yeah” I said and I proceeded to pack it in one of the brown paper bags that sat on the counter.

She continued to eat him raw with her eyes while I packed it. I handed it over to him trying hard to keep my breathing steady and my fingers from shaking. As soon as he left through the door I visibly relaxed and my breathing went back to normal.

Alice turned back into the store room muttering something along the line of freaking beautiful and I couldn’t agree less.

The shop was very quiet with no customers and no activity except me tapping my hands nervously on the counter with my bag hung on one shoulder.

The closed sign had since been put up and Alice had left a long time ago saying she needed to pick up her baby.

It was 9’o clock in the night and mama P had not come back from wherever she went to; leaving me to look after the shop and her house which sat just above the shop. I had already cleaned the floors twice and wiped the tables hoping to keep myself busy before Mama P shows up.

A rattle at the door made me quickly come back to earth and sure enough it was mama p holding bags that were clearly too heavy for her to carry all by herself I rushed to the door ditching my bag on the floor to help her.

“good evening Mama P”

“good evening sweet… oh thank you” she said while I collected the bags from her.

“where will I put it? I asked her.

“the back please thank you” she said once again.

“I am so sorry this is so late and you had to stay here to wait for me. How will you get back now” she said?

“I will be fine” I answered

“no, you won’t, I will call B to come walk you home” she said.

I cringed at the thought of B walking me home, B was Mama P’s infamous son known for his escapades and reckless living. He had hit on me more than once and I have told him no more than once. I would be fine walking home without someone that cannot keep their hands to themselves.

“no mama p I will be fine I will even call you when I reach home”

“she waved me off and picked up her phone to call B I assumed” after a few rings and he did not answer, mama p gave up and with a lot of warning sent me off home.

“your rice tastes bland”

“believe me I know” I answered the voice in my head.

Wait a minute what just happened. Someone talked to me but not out loud it was in my head. I turned to the side as my head turned light and my vision turned hazy. I felt myself slipping into darkness but not before I saw him leaning against a wall lazily with his hands in his pocket and his eyes looking straight at me and then nothing.
