Chapter Eight - Cape Town

June 10, 1741

Thank God! Today we sailed into the Cape Town port. You cannot imagine how happy the people on this ship were. I swear some were ready to jump over the sides and swim the last mile.

Not much of a place to look at from the harbour. The dark skies did not help the feel of the day, but who cared? I just wanted to get off.

Later that afternoon we stood on the dock. We said our good-byes to the crew and the captain. We thanked him for all his hard work in bringing us here safely. When you were at sea for ninety-eight days, you made many friends. You became close to people. Yet here we were again saying good-bye. I longed for the day that I could lie in my own bed and not have to get up one day knowing that I had to move on again.

With the help of the captain, we were able to find an inn that would take us for the next few weeks, until my child was born.
