Her mother’s butler drove her home from the airport.
“It’s good to have you back Miss Karen,” he said.
“Thank you. I suppose it’s good to be back.”
“Both your parents missed you a whole lot while you were away. They were very worried when you had your accident.”
“Really?” she sounded a little doubtful. “As you can see I’m perfectly fine now.”
“Yes, I can see.” The man looked at her through the mirror.
His lovely young passenger was staring out the window. She looked rather down in his opinion, but he would only mention it to his wife later that evening.
When they reached the house Karen took a deep breath. She waited for Montgomery to open the door then she stepped out and stood looking out onto the driveway lined by cherry trees.
Montgomery opened the front door to the house and said, “Welcome home, Miss Karen.”
“Thanks Monty. I’ll be in in a minute, you can go ahead.”
What am I doing here, she asked herself. I am going to suffocate within a week… then where will I go?
