The surrounding area was desolate, with barren ridges, bare rocks, and withered plants that made everything seem bleak and lonely. To be honest, it wasn't the kind of scenery that would lift one's spirits. Compared to this, she thought lush green mountains, clear waters, or even towering skyscrapers would have been more visually appealing.
But Roy didn't answer her question directly. Instead, he asked, "Do you like the color of this balloon?"
Laila looked up. "Yes, I do. The colors of the rainbow are so beautiful." Especially in this environment, the rainbow seemed to be the only splash of color in the world. It had a certain charm, like the finishing touch on a painting. If she were on the ground, she would have captured this moment—it would have made for a stunning visual.
Roy held her hand and stood beside her. "Do you know why I brought you here?"
Wasn't it because the small airport nearby was suitable for takeoff? Laila looked at him curiously. "Is there a special reason?"
Roy smiled and nodded. "Welcome to my world."
He had chosen this place deliberately. At first, he wanted to take her somewhere more beautiful, like a place with mountains, water, people, and flowers. But then, he stumbled upon a photo of this location and immediately decided on it.
"You know, before I met you, my world was like this. Barren, dry, desolate, and filled with monotony and loneliness. Back then, I didn't even know what I was doing. Besides Abel, I couldn't even find a reason for my existence."
Laila's heart ached, and she hugged him tightly.
Roy patted her arm reassuringly and continued, "You know, I'm decent-looking. Because of this face, I've seen how low some people can sink. You might not know this, but I was once tied up and sent to someone's bed. That person was a male model who was supposed to go, but he betrayed me."
This was the first time Laila had heard about this. Although his voice was calm, she could sense his anger and resentment. No wonder he had been so averse to male models at first—there was such a backstory.
Roy smiled at her. "Don't worry, I'm not someone who can be easily messed with. I escaped back then and even beat up that person. Later, I heard that the guy who sent me there couldn't find me, so he took the male model who betrayed me instead." After that, the male model never appeared on the streets again, and Roy left that neighborhood for good.
He didn't delve into the darker details, not wanting to worry her about things that were long past.
"Why didn't you tell me earlier?" Laila's nose tingled, and her heart felt heavy as if it might overflow with emotion.
"It was a long time ago. And don't you think I've already become someone that person can only look up to now?" Someone who could only dominate in the slums didn't seem all that impressive to him anymore. If he wanted, he could easily throw down a few hundred thousand dollars and have people lining up to send that person to hell.
But he didn't do that. He had too much to lose now and didn't want his past to affect his future.
"Laila, I'm telling you this because I want you to know that the old me was like the ground beneath us—empty and barren. But then you appeared, like a rainbow, bringing the most beautiful colors into my life."
Laila's eyes welled up, and her voice grew husky. "That's the most beautiful love confession I've ever heard from you."
Roy reached into his coat and pulled out a small velvet box. He opened it to reveal a stunning ice-blue diamond ring that seemed to intertwine with the sky. "Then, will you listen to my love confessions for the rest of your life? Will you fill my world with your colors?"
"..." Laila stared at the ring, her mind blank.
In an instant, countless memories flooded her mind, flashing by like a kaleidoscope. She saw the moments they had met, the happy times, the sad times, the dangerous times and the blissful times.
Roy waited for her answer like a prisoner awaiting sentencing. When he took out the ring, his heart had already leaped into his throat. Now, he felt like his pounding heart might jump out of his mouth. The tension was almost suffocating.
Until her voice came.
"Yes, I do."
Those words, as if descending from heaven, pulled him out of hell and into paradise. At that moment, he felt like fireworks were exploding before his eyes, and everything was dazzlingly bright.
"Thank you, thank you, Laila." Roy's hands trembled as he removed the ring she had been wearing and replaced it with the ice-blue diamond ring.
Laila couldn't find any reason to refuse him. He loved her, and no one could replace him in her heart. She didn't know if it was love—she had never experienced such intense emotions in either of her lifetimes. But she knew that if he weren't by her side, she would surely crumble from the pain.
They seemed to have skipped the passionate, fiery stage of love and gone straight to the comfortable, familiar stage of an old married couple. But she liked it that way, believing it was a more sustainable form of love—warm and sweet.
She could feel his excitement. His fingers were trembling so much that she worried the beautiful ring might slip and fall out of the basket.
But he managed to get it on her finger.
The ice-blue diamond ring was so clear and mesmerizing, sparkling brilliantly in the sunlight as if it were a divine object that shouldn't exist in the human world.
"It's so beautiful." She knew that such a small thing could captivate the vast majority of women in the world, including herself.
Roy's eyes softened as he gazed at the diamond as if looking into her eyes, his soul captivated by that icy blue hue. "The moment I saw it, I knew it was the one. It's the only diamond that could rival the beauty of your eyes."
Laila suddenly realized that the color of the diamond matched her eyes.
He had even thought of that. It couldn't get any more perfect. She felt that even if she hadn't fallen for him before, she would have after this. How many people could resist such wholehearted devotion? At least, she couldn't.
"I love it. Thank you." She raised her hand toward the sky. "I feel like I've brought the sky onto my hand."
Roy took her hand and kissed it gently. "No, the sky brought you to me."
Laila's eyes softened as if they were melting.
