"Alex, you need to get up now! We are leaving in fifteen minutes and I am not going to wait for you!" I could hear my mom yelling from my sister's room, then she stomped her foot. Unfortunately my sister's room was above mine, on the second floor; and my mom knew by her stomping her foot it would annoy me and wake me up. My mother was always in a rush and annoyed in the mornings and I didn't blame her; she was a single mother of two and was having trouble at work. She was a hard working, independent woman, that always had my back and tried to protect me, even if I gave her a hard time, sometimes.
"Okay, okay" I yelled back. I had been up for a while now but just stayed in bed, looking at my phone. I was looking at HER Instagram and was debating, if I should follow this girl that I had started to like, or just wait to see what would happen today. I was excited about today, it was going to be the first time that we would hang out, outside of school, even if it was with other friends.
I heard my mom come down the stairs and that's when I decided to get up and change for school. I opened one of my drawers and pulled out a pair of jeans; then went to the closet and picked up a clean looking shirt. I went into my bathroom and brushed my teeth; and like that I was ready. I went to go sit on the edge of my bed when Bob walked in, he rubbed against my leg. I leaned down to pet him and said "I think that today will be the day I try to get to know her better and get her number, or something.." I couldn't get HER out of my head and sometimes she was all I could think about. Bob just purred, like always when I petted him.
"Alex, now! I have to take your sister to school too, you know!" I hated that my mom had to drive both my sister and I to school. Ariel was in the fifth grade and I was in the tenth, therefore, we went to different schools and they weren't close to each other. The whole year, I kept telling my mom that I could get a friend to pick me up so that she wouldn't have to rush and would have time to get ready for work herself. But she said that the morning rides were the only time that the three of us actually talked and were together. And she was right; she worked from nine in the morning to five in the afternoon, I was at school from eight to three and then went to work at four and Ariel, my sister would go to school and then my aunt would take her to dance classes.
"I'm already in the car." I said teasing her. I grabbed my books and ran out the door, toward the car. I didn't grab a coat or anything which I regretted when I came to a stop, but I didn't want to go back in the house.
Ariel was sitting next to me in the back sit, when she turned and looked at me, "You look like a mess. Your hair is everywhere."
"Be quiet, you look like a mess too, you know. We are brother and sister, so that means we look alike." I was used to all her teasing and she was used to me teasing her back; it was a bond only her and I had.
"We are half brother and sister, get it right!" She was right. Mom had been with my dad for years and then he decided to leave. And then a couple of years later, she met Ariel's father. He was in our lives but mother had thrown him out when she found he had another family. And she was the sidechick that he got pregnant.
"But you still look like a mess." I said laughing.
"Okay, guys, I think that's enough of teasing each other. Now, Alex, I know that you have plans for after school and that you don't know what time you will be back but I really do need you back home around 7:30, please. We have to go to your uncle's birthday party. Okay?" She said, reminding me.
"I'll definitely be back home before 7:30, don't worry." For the rest of the ride to the elementary school we just listened to the radio and Ariel kept poking me. And before I realized, Ariel was waving bye to us and was heading to the school. On the way to the high school, a white car zoomed past us and I thought I saw someone. Both the girls in the car looked very nice but the one in the passenger seat looked familiar and prettier than the other girl.
I noticed that the car was also heading toward the high school and then realization hit me and that's when my hands started to sweat and I think that my mom noticed something was wrong. "Are you okay?" she asked.
"Yeah, just nervous. I have a test in my first period today." I said and it wasn't a complete lie, I did have a test. I looked up and saw that there were three other cars in between us and the white car because of that I didn't see HER get out. "Bye, mom, I'll see you later." I said, trying to rush out the car.
I started walking towards the table where I usually hang out in the morning before classes started, when I heard Liam's voice. "Look at this! .. Is it your birthday orr.. DO YOU HAVE A DATE TODAY?" I knew exactly what he was talking about, I had seen her in the car. From what I saw she was dressed differently and all I knew is that I wanted to see her. She had the brownest eyes that I had ever seen and the pinkest lips that matched her light brown skin. When Liam mentioned something about her having a date, I felt my emotions change to jealousy.
"Yeah, it's my birthday, so where is my gift?" She said and reached her arms out.
"No for real? You never dress up like this? What is up with you?" Liam kept messing with her. I was about to step in and defend her, when she said ""What? Can I not dress differently? I am a girl after all."
I had enough of hearing Liam tease her so I said "Hey, everyone!" So that they would know that I was standing there. The girl that was standing, turned around so fast I thought that she was going to fall but she didn't. Some hair strands had fallen into her face and I wanted to push them away from her face to just see her eyes.
She looked up, with a look of surprise and it looked like she was blushing. This was the first time that I had seen her with her hair up and she looked really pretty with it up. Today she wasn't wearing a regular t-shirt or a sweatshirt, but a nice blouse, and her jeans hugged her curves in the right places; not that I cared what she wore, she was a beautiful person and she looked great in everything. She was a fun, kind, smart person that made me feel things no one has ever made me feel.
I noticed that I was staring at her and to act like I wasn't, I reached up and protected to push my hair out of my face. Play it cool Alexander! Don't say anything stupid but say something nice! I thought to myself.
And that's when I said "Hey, Camila. You look pretty today."
