Chapter 49: Allies and Traitors

Xaran was growing nervous. Everything was crashing together at once; Wethelnar was falling under siege, Kalann Sefu was on his way up, and the amulet was almost within his grasp. There was no room for error now.

Beyond that, Kalann's mastery over the amulet was troubling. He was certain the warrior had no grasp of his true power, but he was already tapping into it. Xaran needed to put him down before he grew any stronger.

He smiled. Kalann Sefu. Ever since the fool had unearthed the amulet, Xaran could feel his emotions as acutely as his own. A picture of Kalann had coalesced in his mind; an outsider, noble, emotional, unsure of himself, but somehow deluded into thinking he could save his world. They'd never met before, but Xaran almost considered him an old friend. It would be a pleasure to finally see him face to face.

A shame he'd have to die once his duty was fulfilled. But no use crying over the little things, was there?
