Chapter 21: Vekaya and the Shamassons

After returning – I don’t know why – to the dormitory, I shifted from one foot to the other for a moment, lost in an unfamiliar feeling, and then wobbled down on my brother's bed. My father had told me to look out for Caedrus and my mother. What had I done? I didn't even know where either of them was. Still, I felt like there was a pillar of granite between me and actually feeling bad about what had happened. I didn't feel anything. It was a strange place. And so, I sat on the bed in that strange place, watching the air float around the room.

Several of the younger children, all boys and all around Caedrus' age were beginning to stare at me. It didn't matter, though. Soon a boy about my age came up and said in a very deep voice, “I think you'd better go. You need to be in classes.”

I nodded without saying a word, stood, and walked quietly down the hallway.
