Chapter 29: Courting Disaster

Eliza had only been to Chicago once in her life, and she didn’t really remember it. A cousin had gotten married and her family had tried to take in the entire Windy City over the course of a long weekend. She was six at the time. This trip, if it could be called a trip, was much, much different.

She was already a bit angry with Alessandro, as she’d only seen him twice since they had slept together. He hadn’t even been at breakfast; Ms. Veselsky had briefed and quizzed her on a few things to see how quickly she could come up with backstory and stay true to what she’d been told. An ingratiatingly nice chef had served breakfast, tofu scramble in the form of eggs benedict, complete with some manner of vegan hollandaise sauce. It was delicious, but she had barely been able to enjoy it, as she wolfed down information and tried to hit the verbal stepping stones that Ms. Veselsky was providing.
