Chapter 35: Emily reacts to Debra

Martin picked her up on the Friday night and they drove to Merounda in some silence. Martin was tired and Debra was thoughtful. However, the silence was companionable and was part of the pleasure they felt in one another's company. It was as if they were already an old married couple but there was nothing unromantic about it. It felt relaxed and free from all the usual striving that so often takes place at the start of a relationship.

As Savvas was away on business in Athens, Toula had prepared Debra her own bedroom. She meanwhile would sleep with the old yiayia in the back room and Martin was to be given her son's bed while Petros slept on a camp bed in David's room.

'But I can sleep on the sofa, you mustn't give up your own room,' said Debra, half wishing they had decided to go to the local hotel. 'We seem to be putting you to a lot of trouble.'

'You're guests. Of course you must have the best rooms!' said Toula indignantly.
