Chains bounded the living armor, and his soul took the form of an old man with a crown on his head. He growled at me, and then the souls of my comrades took on a mortal body and they glared at the old emperor, but some wavered when they his memories.

Simply, he's been stuck here playing a game where he'd conquered the world when in real life he failed to do so.
