Zoe's POV
We arrived at a stream and Noah just jumped into it. "Hey, are you fucking serious? There could be anything in that water." I said.
My voice was thin with stress. I took a deep breath and pushed my hair out of my eyes. "There's nothing in here, you should join me." He suggested.
Matteo removes his shirt exposing his body. My mouth was left open for a few seconds before closing it, I gawked at his muscular well built body. "Hey. Are you lost?" He asked me holding my hands.
My stomach did a backflip. "So, have you and Scott been dating for long?" He asked and I couldn't concentrate. My eyes were focused on his masculinity. I couldn't remember words, so I nodded. "Did you two go to school together? " I nodded again. He smiled and I felt heat spread through my body. "You're actually not saying anything."
I smiled. "Sorry. I was lost in my world of stupidity." He chuckled.
His dark eyes never left hers. "Thats cool. Listen, can I ask you another question?"
I nodded, cursed myself, then said "Sure."
He winked. "I want to swim but your hands are holding onto mine so tight." How could I not have noticed. "Can I have my hand back now?" Zoe turned bright red and released him.
He dived into the water. "Aren't you going to join them?" I asked Liam as he walked towards me.
"I hate swimming." He answered.
"Same here, I actually hate swimming a lot."
He chuckled. "I saw the way you looked at him." He muttered and I looked at him.
"I don't know what you're talking about," I replied, feigning ignorance. He definitely saw me, I should have been careful. "Guys, we have a long day ahead of us, let's start going." I added.
"Hold on a second." Noah said and dived into the water. He didn't come out again for like some seconds, my heart began to beat rapidly.
"There's something in the water." Noah said when his head eventually popped out of the water. He was trying to swim back to land as I saw something come out of the river.
My heart sped up, whacking my chest until I couldn't breathe. It was a snakehead fish. I had heard of them before, they were dangerous sea animals. The snakeheads were members of the freshwater perciform fish family Channidae, native to parts of Africa and Asia on Earth, I was happy that I read about animals before the pandemic. It had long dorsal fins, large mouth, and shiny teeth.
AND IT WAS A DANGEROUS SEA ANIMAL!
"Leave the water." I screamed on top of my voice as they swam towards us. Noah picked up his gun and tried to shoot, I snatched the gun from his hands and it fell on the floor.
Scott's POV
Alexa came to meet me, I didn't know why she approached me. "Hey, can we have a brief conversation?" She asked.
"For what? What's there to talk about?" I asked back, rudely.
An impish grin tugged at her lips. "You'll probably need a friend soon, you can talk to me when that time comes." She answered and made to leave.
"Please come back," I said and he stopped dead in his tracks and looked at me. "I mean, have a seat." I added.
"How are you doing?" She asked.
I smiled. "I'm great, I'm just waiting for Zoe to be back, I've missed her."
"You guys had an argument before she left."
"Yeah, how did you know?" I asked, cleaning my gun.
"I saw you guys in the morning and overheard some of your arguments," she answered and I shot her an offended look. "I know, I shouldn't be eavesdropping on your conversation but I couldn't help it." She added.
"It's fine."
She smiled and sat down. "So huh, I'm working on a project that can take us back to Mars," she began and I frowned. "I understand, it's hard going back to the place that killed everyone."
"What if there's still a pandemic there and we can't return back to Earth?" I asked as she shifted close to me.
I shifted back a little and looked at her waiting for an explanation. "I don't think there would still be a pandemic going on in Mars. The virus killed everyone, we watched our parents die." She answered by bringing back those ugly memories to me.
"Can I see your project?" I asked, standing up. She stood up and smiled.
"It's in the science tent." She answered and walked towards the small tent. I dropped my gun and followed her to the tent.
She brought out a small box. "This small box can take some of us back to Mars." She said.
I laughed. I didn't want to make her feel bad but she was foolish to think that a tiny box could actually take us to Mars. "So what do you mean by some of us?" I asked.
"I've not actually tested it but based on my knowledge, we might get stuck in space if there's a little mistake." She answered.
A gasp escaped my mouth. "Are you dumb? You should not be making objects or things that can get us killed." I said, angrily and she dropped the box on the table.
"Look, we just have to try."
"There's a good reason why we're stuck on Earth, I mean, look at Earth, it's liveliness." I said, trying to make her understand.
"I've shown Jake the object, he wants to use someone as an experiment." She replied and I kicked the wall angrily.
"Are you crazy? Using someone as an experiment for something that's not safe is death."
She sighed. "I know, it's not like it's my fault." She said and leaned on the table.
"How is it not your fault?" I asked.
She looked at me and frowned. "I don't know how to say this."
"I'm ready to hear it, what is going on?" I demanded, aghast.
I wanted to know what was happening, this was murder and Jake had no conscience. How could he suggest using a human for experiment.
"He wants to use ....." She paused and folded her hands, there was no reaction on her face.
I was frustrated. "Use who?" I asked.
"Zoe Kentwood." She answered and my heart skipped a beat.
