Five weeks later, in the early hours of Wednesday. people are already moving out scarcely for their various daily activities.
The street is not yet crowded; the atmosphere is still cold with less noise. The street lights are still on, buses and cars can be numbered. The bus stops are less crowded and the light to bring fort the day is still dimming its way through. Appreciable voices are beginning to be heard in different residences as families are getting ready to set out for the day's activities.
Suddenly, the St. Felix catholic church's large bell began to ring. The bell is one the time setters in Tokex. It is situated in a very high tower, this makes it easier for the wind to carry its sound far and wide. It goes off at every hour except in midnights, in the morning at 5am it rings to awaken its congregation for the morning mass; unknowingly it as well wakes so many inhabitants of Tokex. On this day, this same bell woke Molly up as usual
Molly's room is located directly opposite the fence leading to the gate which makes her see and hear what happens at the gate and beyond before everyone else in the house. She sat up on her bed and leaned directly to the wall holding Chokey firmly. For a while, she is lost in thought. she clung to her pillow tightly and worried about her mom and how she will be able carry their bills amidst her troubles. She thought of quitting her job at Douglas's laboratory but she can't fit in anything but veterinary.
"Nobody likes or appreciates me before now despite my efforts. It will also be the same dejection if I get another job. It makes no sense" She thought
She tried to sit up when she heard a noise at the gate. Immediately, she rushed to the window to see who it is.
"Robin" she mentioned in amazement
She couldn't comprehend where he would be going to at that time dressing in sweater, cap and still covered the sweaters cap. He looked strange. She moved back to her table and turned on her bulb.
"5:54 am" she said looking towards the window still wondering where he goes because it's not the first time and definitely not work. After sometime, she quickly took her mind off it.
"Not like her cares anyway" she uttered reluctantly as she left the room. She looked so untidy in her unpacked hair; her unwashed oily face made her less attractive, her oversized night wear made her look bigger than she is. As she walked sluggishly down the stairs one will think she is mentally ill but she is in her right state of mind but without less cognizance of her personal outlook.
After some minutes, she got to the kitchen to make breakfast her mom came forth.
"Good morning mom" she greeted as she turned
"Good morning dear" Susan replied and patted her back and walked to the fridge
"Mom" Molly called
"Yes dear" she answered looking back at her
"I had a strange dream" Molly said.
"What is it all about" she asked as she collected a can of milk and closed the fridge
"I dreamt of where Robin and I were being chased by a group of people with dogs" she explained
"Hahahaha" Susan laughed out loud "Dogs? Definitely it's one of your dogs occurring in your dream" she tissed as she laughed again
"Maybe" Molly sounded a bit convinced "But, they said Robin had what belongs to them as we ran for our lives Robin fell while those dogs were pursuing us and they pounced on him" she explained further
"Wow" Susan said in astonishment "Take your mind of it, it's nothing" she added
"Ok" Molly replied with relief "I also noticed our stock up food stuffs reduced" she added in a lower tone
"Yeah, we have to adjust to make end meet" Susan said then moved closer and held Molly's shoulder "All will be soon dear" she assured
"Ok, I understand mom" Molly replied as they hugged each other
"Have you noticed Robin's strange movements lately?" Susan asked as they loosed hold of each other.
"Like?" Molly asked raising her eyebrows and shoulders at the same time pretending not to know what Susan meant.
"He leaves very early and comes back late night?" Susan asked
"Yeah I did notice" she agreed as she turned to the pot on fire
"Did he mention why?" Susan asked again
"No" she replied as she turned to her sharply and back to what she was doing again.
"Did you bother to know why" Susan asked further
"No mom, moreover he wouldn't open up if I asked. I think you are in a better position to find out from him" she relied unperturbed
"Molly, Robin is your brother and should be cared for" Susan added but got no reply from her. She slowly walked to Robin's room
After some time, Robin rushed in. carry shopping bags. As he tried to climb the stairs to his room he noticed some movements at the dinning and went to ascertain who's there.
"Is anything the matter?" Molly asked immediately at the sight of him
"Why do you ask?" he asked back.
"Nothing, never mind" Molly replied as she kept serving breakfast
"I'm fine" he said meanly "Where's mom?" he asked again while trying to leave the dinning but turned back again "Please stock these foodstuffs" he said while dropping the bags he had and left
"In her room I guess" she replied "Please tell her breakfast is ready"
As he climbed the stairs slowly singing a popular rap song of joy openly with smile on his face.
"I'm gonna win in all I can,
Cause God has gat my back.
The shameless fishes try to ditch me
But ain't gonna give in
so they know am not a weakling" he sang as he opens his door
Suddenly he shouted "Mom!"
"Why going through my stuff" he asked angrily in a harsh tone as he tried to pack up all that Susan scattered all over the place.
"Robin, what are you doing with so much amount of money? What are you into?" she asked pointing to the money with so much concern as a mother amidst confusion. Then he laughed angrily
"I don't get it mom," he said raising his head "I'm old enough to make money as much as I want, why question this one?" he asked bending to continue packing
"Robin, everything is wrong about it. This is too much," she said opening her palms and raising her shoulder simultaneously "why not deposit in a bank not here, it's unsafe." she argued
"It's none of your business mom" he said in a low tone
"Now you confirmed something is fishy about this money" she said
