'After writing the cause of death, details of the death should be written in the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds.'
"Last night in the west Tokyo penitentiary, Naoki Koruyama, originally sentenced to 15 years for armed robbery is reported to have died of a sudden heart attack at the age of 32. This is just the most recent death..." The news reporter spoke as the street was bustling with people.
"This is unbelievable. Criminals are dropping like flies."
"It's a little scary but at the same time it's kind of cool."
"Yeah just make sure you don't do anything bad."
"I wouldn't be surprised if the police were behind this."
"No way, the police don't have that kind of power. Don't you know about him?"
"Him?"
"Kira."
Back with Light, the boy was on his computer, looking up random websites which were popping up because of the recent killings. "Ryuk. You should check this out." He called the shinigami who peered over the boy's shoulder, looking at the screen.
"Websites like this are popping everywhere lately." Light smirked as he worked his mouse cursor around the laptop screen. "The legent of Kira, the saviour." Ryuk read. "Oh. Sounds pretty cool. Is this about you?" Ryuk asked and Light nodded.
"Yeah. I think they've taken the name 'Kira' from the English word 'Killer'. Can't say I'm too happy about that but... It looks like that's the name they've decided to give me. When I search the word 'Kira', I'm pulling up tons of sites just like this one. The media hasn't picked up on it. They're still calling this a succession of unexplained deaths among the world's most wanted criminals. But, the people of the world can already sense that there is something happening. They know that there is someone out there passing righteous judgment." Light spoke with a kind of an insane look in his eyes.
"Oh?"
"Human beings are that, Ryuk. Although this would probably never happen in school. Let's say that the students were asked to discuss whether bad people deserve to die. Well, you can bet that every one would give the politically correct answer." He spoke as he leaned into his chair, staring at his computer.
"It's just wrong to kill people."
"That's what they're bound to say. Of course, that's the correct response to give, right? Humans will always try to maintain appearances when they're in public. That's just how we are. But this is how they really feel." Light said as his computer showed a bunch of comments which were in support of Kira and his killings.
"Most are too afraid to support me as they're worried about what others will think. Many would rather deny my existence. But on the internet, where you can remain anonymous, support for Kira is growing. Maybe people are afraid to say that out but they all understand what's happening. Someone's making the bad guys disappear one by one. Those who've done no wrong are cheering for Kira in their hearts because they have nothing to fear. While those who have done wrong are on the run. Efforts to hide from an unknown enemy. This is how it should be. It's perfect. Everything is going just like I planned." Light spoke with his arms crossed across his chest.
Light looked at his TV which had started a new broadcast. "We'd like to apologize for the interruption. As of now, we're bringing you a live worldwide broadcast of the Interpol's ICPO." The news reporter spoke.
"What's this? Interpol?"
"We now take you live to the ICPO." The news reporter said and a man appeared on the screen with the name 'LIND. L. TAILOR' placed on a board in front of him.
"I head up an international police task force which includes all member nations. I am Lind. L. Tailor. Otherwise know as L." The guy spoke. Light's eyes widened. "What? Who is this guy?" He asked. Back at the Japanese police headquarters, the people were confused.
"So this is how it all begins." Soichiro spoke as he looked at the TV. "Sir, I don't understand. He's never actually shown his face before, right? Why would he choose to do it now?" Matsuda asked, standing next to him. "That must mean L's serious about this." Soichiro spoke.
'L. We've followed every single one of your orders. Now it's time for you to prove what you've said to the ICPO.'
"Criminals around the world are being murdered by a serial killer. I consider this crime to be the most atrocious act of murder in history. I will not rest until the person or persons responsible are brought to justice. Kira, I will hunt you down. I will find you." Lind. L. Tailor spoke and Ryuk moved closer to Light.
"He seems certain he'll catch you." He said in a mocking tone. Light watched the TV with wide eyes. "Hmm. That fool. He'll never find me. He'll have to get this first." He said as he waved the death note in front of the TV with a psychotic look in his eyes.
"And as long as the police don't find it, there won't be any evidence to convinct me. Which means that catching me will be absolutely impossible. I anticipated that the police would get involved and then something like this might happen." He smirked as he leaned against his chair.
"Kira, I've got a pretty good idea of what you're motivation might be and I can guess what you hope to achieve. However, what you're doing right now is evil." The man said and Light glared at the TV. "You think I'm evil?" He smirked. "I am justice! I protect the innocent and those who fear evil! I am the one who will become the God of the new world that everyone desires. All those who oppose that God, they are the ones who are truly evil." He smirked as he pulled out a pen and opened the death note.
"I guess you're just too stupid, L. Too bad, this could've been a lot more interesting if you'd only been a bit smarter." He spoke as he wrote down the man's name, keeping his face in mind as he did so.
"I'll show the world what happens when you cross me. The entire world is watching. L." He looked at the TV, counting the seconds. Ryuk watched in anticipation and so did the people at the Japan national police task force and the general public out and about.
"3...2...1..." Light counted and exactly at that time, the man on the screen clutched at his chest and leaned forward, hanging his head low, seemingly in pain. He struggled to breathe before collapsing onto the desk in front of him. Light's eyes widened even more as he watched the man die. Laugher filled the room as he watched the man.
"What's wrong? You got nothing else to say?" He asked with a maniac laughter and watched two bodyguards take the man on screen away. The fancy letter 'L' appeared on screen again. Light's laughter slowly died down as he looked at the screen in confusion.
"Huh?"
"I had to test this just in case but I-I never thought it'd actually happen. Kira, it seems you can kill people without having to be there in person. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't just witnessed it. Listen to me, Kira. If you did indeed kill Lind. L. Tailor, the man you just saw die on television, I should tell you that he was an inmate who's execution was scheduled for today. That was not me."
"W-What?" Light asked as he stared at the TV.
"The police arrested him in absolute secrecy so you wouldn't have heard about him on TV or through the internet. It appears that not even you would have access to such type of information." Ryuk started to laugh when he heard the real L on TV. "He got you there."
"But I assure you. L is real. I do exist. Now, try to kill me. What's wrong Kira? Come on. Kill me." L started to provoke the brunette. "Y-You bastard." Light muttered under his breath. "What's the matter? Can't you do it?" L asked. The people at the police headquarters and the public were shocked. Some of the people wanted Kira to kill L.
"Well, Kira it seems that you can't kill me after all. So there are some people you can't kill. You've given me a useful hint. Let me return the favor. I'll tell you something that you'll find interesting. Although this was announced as a worldwide broadcast, the truth is, we are only broadcasting in the Kanto region of Japan. I had planned to broadcast this message around the world until we found you but it looks like that won't be necessary. I now know where you are." Ryuk laughed once more.
"This L guy is pretty good."
"The police treated your first killings as coincidences but in actuality the first of your victims was a suspect in Shinjuku. Of all the criminals that have recently died of heart attacks, this one's crime was by far the least serious. Further more, his crime was only ever reported inside Japan. I used that information to deduce this much. You are in Japan and your first victim was little more than an experiment which means that you haven't been killing for very long. We decided to broadcast in Kanto first because of its large population and luckily we found you. To be completely honest with you, I never expected things to go this well but it won't be too long now before I am able to sentence you to death."
"L has certainly lived up to his reputation." Matsuda spoke. "Uh huh. He proved that Kira exists. That the deaths were murders and that he is here in Japan." Soichiro nodded as he looked at the TV.
"Naturally, I am very interested in knowing how you're able to commit these murders without being present but I don't mind waiting a little bit longer. You can answer all of my questions when I catch you. Let's meet again soon, Kira." And with that, the broadcast ended.
Light just stared at the TV blankly. "Really? He's going to sentence me to death? Sounds interesting. I accept your challenge, L." Light smirked agains, the same psychotic look in his eyes as Ryuk stared at him.
'Each of them has to hunt down the other without knowing the other's name or face. And the first one's whose identity is revealed will die. Humans are so much fun.' Ryuk smirked at the thought.
"L."
"Kira."
"I will hunt you down wherever you're hiding and I will eliminate you."
"I am..."
"I am..."
"Justice!"
Later that night, Aya sat in her room, confused. "Who was he talking to? He was laughing at the TV? He was watching the news though." She thought and layed down. Her mind was filled with something else though. Soemthing that happened that evening. With her.
~That evening~
"L-Let me go, you bastard!" She tried to punch the guy but it didn't work. The man pulled her closer and choked her, making her gag and struggle for breath. "Shut up. Just stay still. Don't move around like a worm." The guy growled with a smirk on his face.
Aya struggled to move, slowly getting light headed. The energy in her body started to slowly leave her body but she gathered all of her courage and kneed the man in the stomach. Once his grip loosened enough, she pushed him away and ran for her life and got back home.
~Back to the present~
She shivered at the mere thoughts of what happened. 'It's fine. Just calm down.' She told herself. She covered herself up and forced herself to sleep.
'Tomorrow is another day.'
