A day on the road

Of course the sun had already risen quite a bit until Jay arrived at the garrison. Not that the way had taken him more than two or three minutes, but he really had been late.

To his surprise Kathariel still stood in front of the gate while holding the reins of her horse. While she looked at Jay a bit unhappy, she still greeted him friendly and he directly apologized. Not telling her the whole truth, only about drinking a bit and that it had gotten late, the redhead forgave his blunder.

She as well had only arrived there five minutes prior to that, but when Jay inquired as to why, she kept her mouth shut.

Even Haggard had come out of the garrison when he spotted Jay from the training area on the yard. He said them good bye and even whispered to Jay that "little Kathariel" had taken some time to look good for the youth. To the Commanders misfortune, her long ears were not only for show and she had picked up on that.

Like this their farewell ended a bit cold with the elf cursing at the "old geezer"…

The moment they had left Gold Creek to the east and Kathariel had calmed down a bit, it was her that started a conversation.

Staring with how lucky they were to travel on monsters instead of normal horses, the small talk went on about what they had done since they last met and how things had turned for the better in the whole kingdom. In between both kept joking and flirting a little, but always kept it indirect.

They had no particular topic in their talks and in no time the two had reached the crossing to the McLure's Winery thanks to their fast mounts.

As Jay mentioned that there was going to be a wedding in hopefully not such a distant future, Kathariel inquired.

After Jay told about what he had learned there, she promised to look into how much longer this Stonefield guy would be deployed. With a wink she joked that maybe she could pull some strings and get an invitation as well.

Until they had reached the tower of azura, Jay and Kathariel had not taken a real break. The two of them had only stopped once to eat something Jay had brought from the Inn and not even dismounted.

After Kathariel had tied up her horse and Jay dismissed his, they got welcomed by Nozzle even before they could climb the few stairs to the entrance. The gnome guided them in and once the trio entered the spacious lobby, Kitta Theocritus came walking down the arched stairs as well.

She welcomed them once again and asked if they would like to have lunch there. Jay was about to decline but Kathariel agreed faster than him, so they all ascended to the dining hall on a higher floor.

On their way up, Nozzle and Kitta told about how things changed in the last weeks. After the bandits were gone, the forest had become calm and silent again. Even hunting and defending the region from wild animals had become less of a burden.

Kitta mentioned she had heard rumors about Jay having to do with some of this, but he only shook his head.

Kathariel nearly had burst into laughter at that, but tried her best to keep it low and only grinned to him.

The food was, like Jay had anticipated, pretty blunt:

It was simple bread and roasted dry deer that was hard to chew even for him. The gravy though was pretty good with a fine herbal note, but it also was dearly needed for the meat.

As they sat together for the meal, Kitta asked them where they were traveling. It was Kathariel this time again, that was a tad bit faster.

She explained that she got tasked to supervise the reconstruction of the dock-house and the new route over to Hilder Forest that was going to lead via the ferry there.

Of course the inhabitants of the tower had already gotten note of those new plans. While they welcomed the additional traffic that came with this travel route, they also feared some people might settle close to the tower what would hinder their researches quite a bit. It had a reason they were doing experiments away from civilization.

As for Jay, he only stated that he was going to visit Stillwater. Upon hearing this, Kitta asked if he possibly might be open for another task if he already went to the far east. She was well aware f the trouble that region and the adjoining one had with monsters getting more aggressive.

From what she knew, this could once again be the result of those totems Jay had shown her.

After this small piece of information, she got back to her request.

Apparently there had been another tower with which they were in contact. It was the furthest outpost of the mages society in the kingdom from where not only the region but even the coast could be observed.

They held loose contact as long as there was no emergency, but since a while there had come no response even though they had been long past schedule. Jay's job would be to check on this tower of Ilagamat and the magic device if he took the quest.

If there was nothing amiss he would get a nice pay for more or less free, but should there be any difficulties, Kitta would adjust the quest.

Without question Jay agreed to her and they first headed to her office where she showed him a map and pointed out where this tower was located.

Like he had guessed it was quite far to the east, but not too much for him to reach. He would check there last was what he told Kitta, as his other objectives seemed more pressing.

She was completely okay with his claim and stated that if she asked the army it would most certainly take more time and in case she had to write a normal request, the chances were high nobody took it at all. This way she wrote down a makeshift contract for Jay which she signed and they left her office together.

Only some few minutes later Jay and Kathariel sat in their saddles and left the tower towards the road again. While more than half of the day had passed already, their travel time together was soon to end.

As they reached the crossroad determining the end of their joint trip, Kathariel looked quite down as she halted next to Jay.

"I didn't want to ask, but you seem to have something on your mind. Is your task that bad?" J.

"No,… It's just… Though I don't really wanted the job of surveying the construction of the new road and outpost, it's quite easy. And I even get some free days extra. But I really enjoyed the trip with you and simply don't want to ride alone I guess…" K.

"If you want my company, I'll gladly spend some time with you once I'm back. May be some scouting, a hunt or…" J.

"A lunch?" K.

"Sure!" J.

"It's a date then, right?" K.

"Uhm… y-yeah?" J.

Quite untypical for how bashful Jay had become, he stumbled over her request for a date. Either because he really liked her or because of her sudden twist in their connection, Jay wasn't sure how to answer Kathariel.

Her blushing cheeks and relieved expression told him that he at least hadn't messed up completely with his stuttered answer. Their goodbye was still a bit curt, though as she glanced back to him after they parted, Kathariel softly waved Jay until they got out of sight.

From then on Jay sped up his mount as he finally could go full throttle. The trip With the slender elf had been interesting and relaxed, but he could ride way faster when he was alone.

After a short break, more for him than the magic mount that didn't really need rest, Jay tried to teleport a bit. He soon stopped it again though as he proceeded not really fast. The distance he could go each time was only within sight and he was in the middle of a forest. As it consumed quite a lot of mana for every single spell he mounted again and rode towards Eastvale.

The sun had already started to set when Jay passed the last camping site on the road. Those were nothing more than flat areas next to the highway where a small brook ran close by and that was relatively safe from wild animals.

At most two or three carriages could stop there for the horses to rest or to camp at night.

Half an hour later, night fell and Jay had to fetch one of the magic torches from his inventory to ride on. Though he could have relied on his vision, his horse couldn't keep it's pace in the total darkness of the forest.

The last stretch of his trip that day, Jay slowed down a bit so his mount didn't get to unsteady in it's steps.

Thanks to this, he arrived at Eastvale a bit later than he had hoped for. While there was no real control at the settlements border, the inn was already dark when he arrived. Thinking about it for a moment, Jay decided to not wake the innkeeper and use his tent instead.

On his way over to the sawmill he encountered two guards on patrol who greeted him. Then he found a nice flat spot next to a big boulder and fetched his tent from the inventory when the guards were a bit away. Jay directly entered and went into the small kitchen as his stomach had already grumbled on the way there.

Not long after, he sat at the table in the middle section of the tent where he ate his simple dinner and finally found the time to check his gains from the two nights before.

In the hectic of the day when he got back to Gold Creek, Jay had completely forgotten about checking. And then he had seen that some skills had gotten added from Mia as well, though he neither knew which nor why.

But there was no way he could have checked those with Kathariel next to him, and during the rest of the trip he was in a hurry.

At least he told that to himself, though the truth was: he simply hadn't thought about it later on.

Be as it may, Jay read through his log and got astonished. Starting with the last skill he got, or more accurate got upgraded as he had [Arcane Magic] already on Level 4. It directly went up to Level 7 though (Arcane Missiles) ranked only up to 5. The theory behind his integration was still not clear to him, but Jay slowly formed a theory:

The maximum he could integrate was obviously the Level his donor had, as well as what his own Level could manage.

But there seemed to be other limiting factors as well.

When he remembered the different levels he got from Alexis and Mia back then, both clearly having higher skills, Jay got the feeling either his stats, Jobs or something else had to have been limiting him. It might have been that some skills had no such limitations as well, like special skills for example, but that was nothing he could be sure of.

At least the Level 7 maximum for now could be confirmed with this, as well as that already fully integrated skills wouldn't get copied anew, like [Staves] and [Wand] Jay had gotten from Mia previously.

As he continued to scroll up his log, Jay found [Barrier Magic LVL 7] next. Upon checking, he learned that it had come with (Physical Reflection Barrier LVL 6), as well as (Negating Barrier) and (Counter Magic Barrier) both at level 7.

Following those not overly helpful skills, Jay was happy to find [Shadow magic LVL 7] once again and directly checked it. While (Shadow Bolt) got up to level 7 as well, (Soul drain LVL 5) remained a bit lower.

Like Jay had expected, he read that [Light Magic LVL 7] got integrated in the next line. At least this time he got all his corresponding abilities boosted up to Level 7 as well. Though it was only (Heal), (Instant Heal), (Light Barrier) and (Great Heal) that got integrated at Level 7.

Even [Chant shortening] got another level up, marking the first skill he had integrated from Mia during the night before.

Scrolling up his log even further, Jay found the last skill he had gotten from Whitmore other than two obligatory Status Points. It was only [Bow LVL 2] that brought him a surprising increase to his own LVL 3 Skill.

The same happened with [Hamstring LVL 5] that rose his own to only the same level though. It was not a bad skill, but until that point, Jay had seldomnly found a chance to use it.

That was true for the next skill he found as well, though the reason was completely different.

[Axe Mastery LVL 5] Came with the abilities (Mortal Strike LVL5), (Cleave LVL6) and (Execute LVL5). It was the higher or combined version for every type of axe that got integrated to the same level, but Jay simply had no really good weapon to make use of the skill. The corresponding abilities though were something else.

Looking at the next line in his log, Jay found a completely new skill for the first time that day. It was [Polearm LVL6], a skill that increased the attacking speed with a spear or polearm by a good margin. Additionally it shared the skills with Axes, enabling one to use and enhance them while wielding a different type of weapon.

Again though, Jay has had no corresponding weapon in his inventory...

What followed this new skill were three others Jay already had, but only two rose to Level 7. He was sure [Overpower LVL7] and [Charge LVL 7] would come in handy in future battles. As for [Pain tolerance] that got integrated as well, it didn't change Jay's skills level as it had already been on the same.

It was the same with [Commanding LVL 7] so Jay skipped it and directly went to [Shield LVL 7]. But to his misfortune, that skill as well had already been on Level 7 after he had gotten it from Yrel a short while before.

Even the precious [Sword LVL 7] was no different, so the highest skills he could have integrated had been for naught.

Jay's only hope was for them to at least have granted him some kind of ability points so their Levels might possibly increase once he fulfilled the requirements.

Done with reading through his log, Jay decided to check his status before he would have a look at his inventory. While some of his skills had combined and not many been added, at least his long list hadn't grown much longer.

Some traits though got added and what got Jay really happy, he finally managed to reach over two hundred even if it was only in his Strength Status.
