A forced excursion

Jay didn't even manage to cross half of the room until he heard something rustling behind him. The damn squeaking floor had given him away. It was out of question where the sounds came from and in the next second he got his failed attempt to sneak out confirmed audibly.

"Not staying for breakfast?" P.

While scratching the back of his head he turned around with a smirk. There was no way to talk himself out with the beautiful Tiefling sitting on her bed bare naked. At least she smiled at him when she got up as well and walked over to the kitchen.

During their small breakfast, Jay learned that she didn't hold him leaving against him. It was something she had expected and only woken up as it was around her usual time as well. What Jay hadn't known was her other job of managing the stables for familiars of hunters companions.

As she saw him off at the door to her shop, Penny asked Jay to come by again when he had time and reminded him to keep silent. With a short peck on her forehead, Jay left down the small alley. His parting words were to keep his promise and another one to recommend her and meet again.

With his new bow in hands, Jay walked towards the long bridge connecting Stillwater to the other shore. To his surprise he met Sybill at the Blacksmith right at the town's border and walked over. She had noticed him as well and waved him over.

To his question why she was awake this early, Sybill told Jay she just fetched some new arrowheads while Mirta was still asleep.

He directly inquired about her friend and learned she had woken up not long after he left. Sybill was to relay her thanks to her savior should she meet him first.

After thanking him for his concern, Sybill asked what he was up to.

Jay explained his new quest and though seemingly reluctant to let him leave, the curly haired beauty wished him good luck and promised to make up to him for all his help. Then she swiftly turned around and hurried along the piers towards the inn.

Jay turned around as well and summoned his horse but noticed her looking back as he rode onto the bridge.

The moment Jay had passed it and rode over the plains on the other side, he opened his log to check his exploits of the last night. Clicking on the first thing that greeted him, he received a welcomed notification.

Glad to have received yet another small boost, Jay continued with the skills he had integrated.

The first he found was [Skinning LVL 2] what he had gotten last. It was a skill that might help him with hunting as it made the bloody labor faster and rose the quality a lot.

Then there was [Dagger LVL 2] that he more or less skipped. Neither did it rise his own skill, nor did he learns new Abilities.

For [Leather-working] it was completely different. The for him new skill was at Level 3 and taught him not only how to craft or enhance tough leather gear, it also came with plans for bows.

Scrolling up the log, Jay found [Hunting LVL 3] next. It combined with his own and rose it not only one but two levels. The skill rose his (tracking) ability by a level as well and also taught him how lure animals or call over pets with (Call LVL2).

Last but not least was [Bow LVL 4]. Like [Hunting] before, it rose Jay's own skill by two to Level 6, as well as all of his corresponding abilities. With (Arrow Shower LVL1) it even brought him a new areal attack, though Jay questioned the use of ammunition.

Closing all opened screens, Jay concentrated back at the road as he had reached the slight slope behind which lay the canyon connecting to the wide grassy plains close to Three Corners.

He initially had planned to travel there and then go after the Gnolls, but after inquiring, he learned from Solomon that there were other old ruins than the Perilous ones. Like this Jay took the smaller path leading south-east from the foot of the slope.

After passing around a high hill to his right and through some rock formations, he arrived back at the Eldrin River. The bridge over it was anything but confidence inspiring, not two yards wide and the wood looked withered, so Jay dismounted and decided to cross it on foot.

With unexpectedly no problems he reached the other side of the river and mounted his horse again. From there Jay rode straight towards the south where he saw a gap between the high rocky mountain range in the east and a single high mountain in the west.

The terrain posed not much of a problem as it was mostly knee high shrubs with only a few trees and he had his monster horse anyway. It still took him more than an hour from the bridge to pass over the slope between the mountains where he had entered the next duchy.

From his elevated position he had the perfect view on the simply massive forest that stretched out in every direction starting from the mountain feet.

Thanks to the clear sight, Jay spotted some towers and other parts of the ruins he was looking for, peeking out of the treetops. He had learned they were called Ruins of Sancricity and lay slightly to the west but still surprisingly far from the road where the attack had started.

Around noon did Jay suddenly arrive at a high wall in midst the forest he was riding through. It looked like some sort of city wall, so he decided to travel along it in hopes to find a gate. Three minutes on foot later did he reach not a Gate but a place where the Wall had completely crumbled and climbed over the rubble into the ruins.

Where Jay ended after climbing through the thick wall and some broken building was a relatively wide street that ran parallel to the outer wall. He decides to follow it towards the north-western direction for a while but did not have to wait long for the confirmation that his guess had been right:

Like Jay had guessed, the Gnolls had hid in the ruins and a patrol of two monsters had appeared from a side alley. Getting close to them with shadow step before they noticed him, Jay directly disposed of one and then deep fried the other with lightning from close range.

Though his opponents were of higher level and quite strong, getting rid of them in a single attack still posed no problem.

Following the road for a short while longer Jay didn't have to wait long for his next encounter. This time he finished the three Gnolls all together with magic and even used soul drain on them. There had been no use in staying silent for what he had in mind as the next move.

Only seconds after he had summoned Max, his by then leveled up Void, did the next monsters appear from multiple directions. What Jay hadn't though off though was that his summon was good at pulling the attention to itself.

By the time the fifth Gnoll went down, Max did so as well. And that was only due to Jay being fast at disposing of three of them. His Void had simply pulled the aggro of all eight opponents and that had been too much for it.

After killing the last three with his swords and receiving some more soul stones, Jay summoned Max once again for another try. This time it held out longer, but only until after the second patrol as well.

From there on Jay started no other attempt anymore and went with his new bow.

The weapon was truly perfect for him. Neither was it to big or too small, it had the perfect flexibility for his power and weighted nearly nothing to him. Even the small metal tips at its ends made sense to him once Jay rammed one into a close by Gnoll's windpipe and killed it.

Only the problem of running low on arrows slowed Jay down as he had to pull out some from his victims if he didn't want to run out of ammunition in the middle of exploration. Though he had abundant amounts in his inventory, most of them were simple ones and not those for combat he had just used.

Done with collecting the reusable arrows and whatever was worth looting, Jay walked on towards the south-western direction where the road he was on had turned towards. It led to a wide open space where he made out a giant gate that got overgrown by greenery like more than half of the ruins. But his eyes swiftly shifted towards the plaza again as there was something more worthy of his attention.

While analyzing it, Jay noticed the white fur was reddish at some places and it was riddled with quite a few scars. Thinking that the chances where high this one was the Gnoll that Adohan had encountered, Jay had to dodge an overhead swing with the massive hammer.

He had barely enough time to learn that the monster called Everwhite was a pure offensive and strength oriented fighter and at Level 27. Knowing that and how good the mercenary leader had been in his defense, Jay kept away from the Gnoll and fired consecutive arrows.

It took him quite a few but less than expected shots until Everwhite went to it's knees.

One reason was that Jay tried to load his arrowheads with lightning in hopes to enhance the damage dealt. Though he destroyed four of his arrows in the process, he still managed to get three loaded shots out that really dealt enormous damage.

As the Gnoll dropped it's hammer, Jay rushed in and fired one last arrow at short distance into its neck, earning him a nice bunch of Experience points. He thought for a moment about testing his skinning skill, but looking at the scars and arrow-holes in the corpse, not to mention the burned ones, Jay only took the hammer and whatever arrows still intact.

Three minutes later he encountered a small patrol once again and tried his luck with charging some of the simple arrows he had in stock. He had by then learned to infuse them with care only a little bit and though it took him a moment, he managed to get it done.

The damage was only about half of the other ones, but that was more than enough for an aimed shot to instantly kill the normal Gnolls. Going on like this, Jay proceeded to the south and then south-east.

On the plaza he reached next, Jay had the options to either proceed on the road that seemingly led along the outer walls or take the big one leading towards the center and chose the former.

As he was going to clean the area either way, he thought the chances of some fleeing might be lower like this. At least like this he didn't need to fear getting surrounded that much and proceeded with more ease.

The closer he got to the center, the more traps had been laid on the outer route and the adjoining alleys in which Jay encountered numerous patrols. Like in the other ruins, a few veterans and Gnolls with bows appeared as well, though he had way less trouble defeating them than before.

Only once Jay had reached another plaza at about two third from the length of the ruins did the situation change.

He had in between climbed a higher structure to get an overview and been able to trace the outline of the city wall. By then Jay had been sure the area simply was too huge to have been some kind of temple, even though there were no traces of someone having ever liver there.

What greeted him on the plaza was a special opponent he hadn't directly made out as one. Befitting it's name, Dim Grey was a middle gray Gnoll of medium size. While it was slightly bigger than the veteran monsters, Jay could see the well defined muscles move under the fur.

With no weapon to be seen, Jay wouldn't have needed to analyze it to know this was a bare handed fighter, though it still had its claws.

Deciding to use this as a rare training option, Jay stored his bow away and received his opponent barehanded as well. Of course he shot the two veterans guarding it with his bow before, so the two of them could have a nice fight.

Dim Grey jumped into a run on all fours to this and then jumped at Jay with it's claws stretched out. It was no problem to dodge, but Jay hoped that this wasn't all it did, only to get his hopes slightly betrayed the next moment. The Gnoll went with another charge, though this time Jay retaliated.

Dodging by a tiny margin, he grabbed the monsters thick forearm in the passing and redirected it so Dim Grey crashed into a close by stone pillar. The whole thing broke down and buried the monster under it, though Jay knew the rubble only did minor damage.

Once again the Gnoll tried to charge at Jay and he really wondered if it was only muscles for brains. At that charge he grabbed one of the monsters legs once it had passed him and made use of his own absurd strength.

After three turns of spinning around, Jay sent the monster flying in a wide arch while it spun horizontally until it slid over the ground and finally came to an abrupt halt at a buildings wall.

This time it didn't get back up that fast and moreover refrained from charging in.

Instead the Gnoll closed in carefully while keeping a defensive pose. But the moment Jay got within reach it attacked him with a wide swing with both arms. It was no problem to dodge this all too simple attack for Jay, but more than that he intercepted the monsters right arm and grabbed it. A swift uppercut slightly over the elbow resulted in a loud cracking noise as Dim Grey's right arm broke.

First yowling in pain, the monster went into rage and mindlessly attacked him in even more simple manners.

Jay dodged three more times in hopes his opponent would calm down again, but in the end gave up on it. The fight ended with a crackling hole in Dim Grey's chest where once it's heart had been. A single lightning punch at full power was enough to calm it down once and forever.

With nothing to loot there, Jay took a seat a bit to the side and rested. It had turned late by then and the sun had long started setting. Since Jay hadn't eaten anything since morning, he took this chance even if the smell of burned meat still lingered around.

Not wanting to look at the corpses laying on the ground, Jay opened his menu and clicked on his status.
