They're demons

"I just knew you would come back."

I added afterward. This time, however, I deliberately whisper those words next to her ears.

"You know what they say about curiosity and cats...

I trailed off, I forgot the line. What is it again?

"Something about getting killed..."

I said my thoughts out loud before I could even stop myself from blabbering further nonsense.

When I looked at her again, I saw her whole body tensed.

'Shoot! Now, I messed up.'

I thought to myself.

When I heard my own words, I almost slapped this silly mouth of mine right here right there.

I am not sure why I said it. All I wanted was to strike up a conversation with the other party.

I reckoned it was nice to start with an idiom, it seemed wise and I happened to think of one relatable to our current situation. So I cited it. However, I only ended up making myself sound like a total creeper.

"Who are you???"

She asked me as she tried to sound as bravely as she could. Yet the quiver on her voice betrayed her purpose. I knew she was on her guard.

She must have thought that I am someone that was up to no good.

I looked at her and she stared back at me with those watchful eyes of her. Her stance was suggesting that she was ready to dash off any minute from now if I did not convince her otherwise.

However, the look that she was giving me was already telling me that her mind was already determined against believing a single word from what I was about to say; including the punctuation marks!

"I am like you."

I replied shortly. But then after that, I added,

"Well, not exactly."

She squinted her eyes as she continued to look at me. From the current look of it, it seemed that she was getting more suspicious about me the more I speak.

Well, I suppose she has all the reasons for feeling that way.

"No. What I mean is the things you see, I see them too."

I decided not to beat around the bush anymore and went straight to the point.

She tilted her head on one side, all the while keeping her narrowed eyes on me as though she was trying to see through me.

"So you are just another nutcase like me?"

"You are not crazy."

"You see them to? What are they?"

"Ok... Are you ready for this?"

I felt the need to warn her beforehand, although it was on a roundabout manner. Because I am pretty sure that she would have a hard time believing the next words that I was about to say.

"They're demons."

I said as nonchalant as I could and she scoffed when she heard that.

"That is downright hilarious."

"Yeah... Look, I know, This sounds so much bullshit, right? But the trouble is, there is a little part inside of you that knows that what I am saying true."

"I don't get it. How----"

I know that she was determined to deny knowing anything next to it so I cut her off before she could even say more.

I have interacted to other humans before, and that was how they usually behaved at first whenever they felt unsure about something.

They were quick to deny believing a thing when they could not understand it.

"Listen to the voice inside your head."

I told her but then once again, she laughed at my words with an overwhelming scorn.

"Well, what I know is, that is how people go crazy in just a matter of seconds."

"Oh come on, stop denying yourself. We both know that you knew better than that. I am pretty sure that my words struck a chord somewhere inside you. Jabbing away at you like a..."

For the umpteenth time, I trailed off in the middle of my sentence; I struggled to come up with metaphors,

"....woodpecker, or amphetamine."

I know I have poor choice of words. My figurative speech was not that good. But I am sure that she understood well enough what I am trying to imply.

I was just about to say more. I knew that it was just a matter of time before I could convince her to believe my words. Yet out of nowhere a car horn beeped loudly from my back.
