Nigh but probable

~~~JARED's P o V~~~
"The longer that demon was allowed to use your friend's body, the more lives would be put in danger. Yes, you are its main target. But that did not mean that it was safe to assume that the demon inside your friend will not commit other murders. It was their nature to kill, in the first place so I don't think their frustration towards you would be enough for them to set aside their innate calling for bloodshed. If anything, this might even trigger them more. It was normal for them to crave for a kill so if they can't get you, I could imagine that they would focus their energy instead to come after the lives of other unsuspecting victims. It was for this reason alone that I don't think there is any point to keep this matter dragging way longer than it already was."
My mind was busy thinking of how I could explain our current situation to Cassie without making it sound too complicated for her and since I am preoccupied with this thought as well as the fact that I am in the middle of my explanation, I failed to see the other party's reaction right away.
I did not have the faintest idea of what happened while I was not paying attention, but the next thing I knew, the woman before me already looked aghast.
She looked so pale sitting on the chair with a completely dazed look, reminiscent of a lifeless zombie. Her eyes were staring blankly at the distance as if someone had just stolen her soul.
It took quite some time before she managed to recover from her dazed look. For a moment, I watched her as she stared at the space ahead of me with a look that was even more shocked than she would have been if she had seen a ghost instead.
At first, I was baffled when I saw her expression until I noticed that she was actually looking straight past me.
Then it hit me that there was a chance that a demon managed to slip out from the detection of my radar and that Cassie was seeing one at the moment. When the thought crossed my mind, I hurriedly followed the direction of her gaze.
It was not that I am not confident with my own skills. I knew well enough that the chance of it ever happening was nigh.
But the reason that I started having second thoughts was that I figured a demon's appearance could most likely be the only plausible cause of the other party's trepidation.
However, even after checking with my own perfectly working two good eyes, there was nothing there. Cassie was staring at an empty spot and I did not feel any malicious intent around it.
At this point, I was planning to ask her what was wrong. However, before I could even say anything to her, she outdid me.
"Can't we just leave?"
I noticed the urgency at the edge of her voice and this made me curious as to what really happened behind my back. So instead of answering her, I asked her back.
"Right now?"
It was just a while ago when she was acting reluctant to come with me. In fact, I did not think a complete minute had passed already since she expressed her hesitation.
As such, I could not help but wonder what was with the contrast? Were humans usually this indecisive?
At one moment, she did not seem to be in hurry, and then the next moment, she wanted me to make haste. She sure knew how to contradict herself.
On the other hand, instead of clearing my confusion, her action afterward only left me with more questions in the head. I became more perplexed than how I already was before I even started asking her.
"As in, right now!"
She replied and with a forceful attitude, Cassie slammed her fist on top of our table. She abruptly rose to her feet and almost knocked her chair off on the floor in the process of her outburst.
I could not for the life of me understand why this lass was suddenly making a scene in public and risked attracting unwanted attention towards the both of us.
However, before I could even point that out to her as well as comment on her unusual behavior and say something in return, she added,
"I don't want to stay in this place any longer."
I heard her saying that and she genuinely sounded terrified this time to the point that when she uttered those words, I could almost hear her voice quivering with emotion.
So even though I knew that my curiosity would eventually bug me if I let this one go, I paid it no heed. I still have a lot of questions that needed answers from her but at the same time, I also would like to honor her request.
As such, in the end, I decided against inquiring at her anymore.
"Alright, there is no need for you to be mad at me. I get it, okay?"
I insinuated before I left my chair and started making my way to the exit. I refrained from talking afterward but even without me checking at the back, I knew that Cassie was at my tow and following me.
I could feel her presence walking behind me but I never looked back. Instead, I only continued to lead the way with both my hands inside the pocket of my jeans.
Normally, I would not walk like that. But today, for some reason unknown even to my person, I felt conscious walking with my arms swinging at the side, that was why I pocketed them.
