He gripped his cane and stared out of his tower.
At the Grimm that were destroying everything that humanity had built with long years of effort and hard work.
The sky was covered in Nevermores and Griffins. Not to mention the Wyvern that was circling around and spawning more and more Grimm in the city.
"Why are you doing this Salem?" He asked in his empty room, Glynda having left a few minutes ago to aid the city.
As far as he was aware, Salem's main goal was to get the four Relics, summon the two brother gods, and then finally attain death when the brother gods destroy humanity in Remnant once and for all.
So why… why would she do this.
It didn't make any sense.
He had known her for centuries and… this was not like Salem.
Which meant that someone else has usurped her control over the Grimm. Or that she had been pushed into a corner by someone.
His thoughts went to the Night Walkers who he suspected to have taken the two Maidens.
They could be the only ones who provided a challenge to Salem. But to push her this far.
He shook his head and sat down on his seat as the City was destroyed in front of him.
There was a time when he would've felt rage and helplessness at not being able to do anything to stop the Grimm and save the city he had vowed to protect.
But now… he had come to accept his fate.
If this attack continued then he won't survive the day.
Something caught his eyes and he saw a large King Taijitu with over a dozen heads, all covered in bone armor, breaking through the city walls and entering the city. It crushed any buildings on its way and lead another horde of Grimm inside the city.
Hydra.
Yet another titan in the area. As if the one flying in the sky wasn't enough.
He laid back on his chair and sipped on his coffee, wondering what kind of person he'll reincarnate as next.
If there will even be any people left for him to reincarnate in.
If there weren't any, then would he finally be able to rest and go to the afterlife?
The thought filled with uncertainty.
On one hand, he would finally get his wish to be put to rest.
On another hand, despite all his centuries of efforts, Salem did manage to destroy the whole civilization of the world in a single day.
If he had the Relic or Destruction, the Relic of Creation, and the Relic of Choice then he might have been able to do something about this.
But he was too old and too tired to do something so heroic at this point.
And then... something happened.
All the Grimm on the ground stopped attacking at once.
And the Grimm flying in the sky stopped making any noise.
For a second, it was as if the whole world had stopped.
He stood up and looked down at the ground where Glynda, the Staff members, and the students were holding the last line of defense against the Grimm.
Grimm that had stopped moving altogether.
Some of his students went forward and killed those Grimm.
The Grimm didn't retaliate. They continued to stand there. Looking confused, as if they suddenly forgot what they were supposed to do.
The rest of the student body cheered and despite Glynda's efforts to hold them back, they moved out of the barricades they'd created and started slaughtering the Grimm.
In the distance, the Hydra was being bombarded by all the Hunters in that area.
The titan didn't even react to those attacks. Not when those attacks didn't do any damage to it.
But…
If Salem had paused this attack then what did that mean.
Was she finally defeated?
That was… unlikely to happen.
She and her hordes of Grimm must have defeated whoever put her in that tough spot.
He sipped on his coffee and watched with narrowed eyes as the Grimm waited. And waited. And waited. And then…
The Wyvern flying in the air let out a loud roar that shattered the glass in the buildings under him and reverberated through the entire city. Then it turned to the West and flew away while the other Grimm scattered away, leaving the city all at once.
The Hydra did something similar. Its many snakeheads letting out a loud and unnerving hiss before it turned and left the city as well, the other ground-based Grimm leaving the city after it.
It looks like he would not be dying today after all.
That fact left him oddly disappointed.
He finished his coffee and dialed Glynda's number.
She picked up her scroll after the first ring.
"Ozpin. Are you seeing this?" Glynda asked, relief evident in her voice.
"I am." He replied "Now. Why don't you and the rest of the students that stayed during the holidays go to the city and help set up the hospitals and see if you can save any of the civilians by aiding in the rescue efforts."
"I will." Glynda said and he looked out at the devastated city, wondering if it could still be saved.
It was likely that he would have to step up and take the role as its leader once again.
Would he have to become king once again?
He didn't want that. Being a King and taking on the responsibilities for so many people was always very taxing on him.
But… the people needed him. And he needed to step up and fulfill the oath he had taken as a Hunter and as a protector of humanity.
He put his coffee mug down on his table and gave his office one last morose look before he headed for the elevator.
The next few years or perhaps even decades were going to be very difficult.
