Prologue

Rey shoved the bloodied knife into her boot, searching frantically for Evan. He was supposed to be here three minutes ago. Staring at the dead body at her feet, Rey pushed all thoughts out of her brain and ran back to where Evan had said he was. The control rooms. Racing through the familiar black and white hallways, Rey fought back tears as the worst-case scenario flooded her mind.

When she reached the door of the control room, Rey noticed that the handle was sticky. 'Fuck. No. No...' Rey prayed as she kicked open the door.

"Evan?" she called out tentatively. There was no one sitting in front of the screens.

"For heavens' sake, Evan, come out now," Rey demanded, pushing the door open fully. It hit something. Turning and looking down, she noticed a body...not a body. A cut up body. The legs were detached from the body, as. was the head. Rey stifled a scream as she recognised the face.

"No!" she repeated over and over again, kneeling down. It was then she spotted a bloody note by the mutated body.

The note read: 'Like this present? Well, I've got more. Room 103. Be there...or be killed. Your choice. xoxo, Kayleigh'

Her Game Mistress? Their Game Mistress?

What on earth-

A loud gunshot interrupted Rey's train of thoughts. "Put your hands up. Under the orders of Kayleigh, the Game Mistress of the 77th Killer Game, you are to be escorted to Room 103. Comply with our orders and you will be given a lighter sentence."

Rey turned her head, slowly, her eyes piercing through the startling blue eyes that met her black ones. "Fuck off," she choked out.

The man repeated the sentence.

Pissed off, Rey snatched the gun from his hand and shot him in the head.

The man fell to the ground like a rag doll.

Why did Kayleigh kill Evan? Wasn't she the one who recruited him, anyway?

And wasn't their team winning?

Calming herself down, Rey locked all the windows and pulled down all the blinds. She used a white bedsheet she found in the corner of the room to cover Evan's body. And then she went out of the room, locking it. Staring at the key in her hand, she contemplated whether she should burn it.

It was the only key that unlocked the control room.

As she passed by the well where she and Evan shared many great moments, Rey threw the key--and the note--into the well, and watched as it got smaller and smaller.

All the tears evaporated from her eyes.

'Let the games begin.'
