All day, Sage sit's in her room imagining a life. A life where she lives in a cottage surrounded by flowers and a cat, she would read outside the smell of grass and flowers infiltrating her nose, the sun setting casting the nicest glow on her face. She would grow trees, apples and pears, strawberries, blueberries and raspberries, her bees would buzz through my garden. Her neighbors who live miles away kids would swear they saw fairies flying through the sages and lavenders. She would live off wind turbines or solar panels, everything would be eco. Sage would sell candles and books full of dried up flowers, maybe she would even sell flowers or her apples.
It's 8pm and she's imagining her life or how she wants her life to be. In real life she lives in Beverly Hills, her garden is nonexistent the only plants she has are in her room, her cat well she's not allowed a cat. When she goes outside she hears the cars and the smell is the least of nice, Sage spends her time reading in her room looking out of her window wondering what could be, but she gets sucked back into reality. Her dad is a lawyer, always off working, fighting with his co-worker. Her mom is a doctor, also always away. She has a younger brother but he's always in his room, just like her always in their rooms, gaming screaming at his screen, at some people he's playing with.
She doesn't have a good relationship with either of her parents. Her dad is sexist and he's always had trouble accepting the fact that she's lesbian. One day she was with him at work and the whole day he was screaming at his co-worker saying stuff like:
"You can't do anything"
"Go back to the kitchen"
Her mother on the other hand, she's nice, she's hard working but she wants Sage to be like other people. Unlike her father she accepted her immediately but she wants Sage to be someone she's not:
"Try cheerleading"
"Sign up for debate class"
Not that these things are bad, they just aren't for her.
It was the 5th of September, Sage had heard there was a party at Becca Brown's house but of course she wasn't going, parties aren't her thing. She reads her favorite book 'little woman' till 9pm, She was restless and she wanted to go for a walk. Sage walked to her closet and grabbed her favorite coat. She knew her parents weren't going to be home for the next few hours, her mom had a night shift and her dad was on a business trip to New York for a case.
She went outside and felt a fresh breeze and small water droplets race down her face. She breathed in the horrendous air. She heard the faint sound of a police siren. She had been hearing them all day. She started to set off, no destination in mind. The streets were wet and the rain was drizzling down.
Her mind began to wonder, lately she has kept on remembering this one memory. It was from when she was 6, it was bring your child to work day, so her dad took her. She walked into the room and her dad immediately left because he got in a fight with his co-worker. She saw this girl her age sitting on the couch so Sage came up to them and started to talk to them. They said something and Sage ended up crying. They spent the whole day together their name was umm Mandy, Molly, Miranda, ugh something with an M, Melania. They probably have forgotten about Sage, they go to her school so Sage kinda knows what they are up to.
Sage was thinking about this memory when she found herself standing in front of a house. Music was blasting and she could see two people hooking up in the front yard. Becca's party. She heard in the distance a few cop sirens but she didn't think too much of it. She just stood there, debating whether to go in or not, she needed more fun in her life. The police sirens were slowly getting closer and she just stood there. The doors opened and a flood of people came rushing out, one dude yelling:
"Police"
She looked over and saw that a girl, she believes Becca had just fallen down, then the police had swarmed the area.
"Get the first aid kit and help the girl, and you two grab as many kids that you can!"
They are going to think Sage was at the party. She needs to run. She moved her leg to get to run away, but a guy ran in front of her, a cop. He grabbed her and moved her into the police car. No one else was in the backseat but she could see that there was another girl lying on the floor.
The door opened again and another cop was carrying the girl who had fallen. He signaled Sage to move over. Sage rolled her eyes and moved over to sit in the middle of the backseat. Her and Ken were talking the whole time on the way to the police station, they were both looking out for Becca and watching her wake up and go back to sleep.
Once they arrived at the Station, Sage hoped out of the car and was shown one way while Becca was carried another way. She ended up in a cell with five other people.
"Hi I'm Sage.
"Yeah, Hi"
Everyone else quickly replied. Sage looked around and looked at everyone in there. Then she saw a face she remembers from her past.
"Wait, are you Melania, if you aren't I've just embarrassed myself."
I blurted out, in between the others' conversation. The girl looked at me weirdly.
"Umm yeah, how do you know."
She told me.
"Yeah, I'm Sage, obviously, I just said my name before if you forgot, and now I'm blabbering. If I'm not wrong but like do you remember a few years ago, umm our parents are co-workers and there was like a a bring your child to work day, and I talked to you and we got along, anyway this is not important, just forgot I said anything."
Sage mumbled and you could see Melania's face light up.
"Wait, I knew I recognized you from somewhere."
They both smiled and got into conversation about how their lives have been since they met eleven years ago. Sage could see how different they look but the conversation they had had so far was super good and their personalities fit so far so good. Soon Melania and Daniel start to get into conversation so Sage turned to Nathaniel who had been sitting alone the whole time.
"Umm Hi, Sage"
Sage Hummed. Nathaniel rolled his eyes
"Ok and I already know this"
"I was just trying to be nice, I'm sorry"
Sage cried.
"Ugh, fine I guess. Hi I'm Nathaniel"
Nathaniel huffed sarcastically. A big grin formed on Sages face.
"You seem happy. You know being positive helps you in life, I know sometimes being negative is ok but you need to be positive sometimes it increases your health, I think at least."
"Is this good enough!"
Nathaniel showed a smile while Sage nodded her head in approval. Sage sat down next to Nathaniel and put her hand on her head.
"How do you live like this. I mean going to jail. There are so many rumors that you go to jail all the time and how to you survive, I've been in here for around 30 minutes and I can't seem to get the thought out of my mind, that my parents are going to be so disappointed and I don't know"
Sage whimpered, with tears starting to form, which were whipped away with her coat.
"First off"
Nathaniel patted Sage on the back and he carried on
"And secondly never believe rumors but yeah they are true. I know how you feel, that's how I felt when I first went to prison. It gets better and like you said it's good to be positive."
Sage glared at Nathaniel
"Correction I said something like: 'You know being positive helps you in life, sometimes being negative is ok' so like a wise person said 5 minutes ago it's ok to be negative sometimes."
Sage laughed and the tears fell away.
"But I'm scared to disappoint them, how does it get better and when. I just hate it, everything I do is to try to not let them down, but I feel like I'm always letting them down. It doesn't matter anyway, I'll be out tomorrow hopefully, oh there comes Becca I think"
Becca was carried into the cell and was sat down across from Sage.
