Chapter 22- Disappointment

Tolani’s relationship with her mother was a different thing entirely from that with her father. She could never do anything right by her mother. Mrs. Dolapo Ige had lived a hard life and Tolani suspected this was responsible for her 'No-joy', 'kill-joy' attitude to life. She was in a sour mood most of the time and criticized most things about her daughters while setting a very high, almost impossible standard for them. Tolani and her siblings had never experienced closeness to her although the boys were a little luckier. Although she was not one to show much affection as a person, not to her husband, daughters or even sons, it was clear that her sons were her major source of pride. She dotted on them, especially Omokorede and did everything to make them comfortable while setting a much easier standard of behavior for them.
