New Recruit

It's been four months since the attack on the federal agencies. The Southern California pINPOINt headquarters got remodeled and got better security. After the attack, Nevel has branded as the most wanted criminal. Gudmund and his team have been trying to locate him, but there is no way of finding him. So Gudmund had to make the case cold and put it away for a while till some clues came up.

Right now, at the entries of the building, a young woman in her early twenties, long blond hair, light skin, and a slim body, is standing looking at the facility. She went into the building and went up to the front desk, and the woman at the desk looked up at her, "May I help you?" she asked.

The young woman hands her badge, "I am the new liaison officer, and this is my first day."

The woman took her badge and went through the computer. "Oh, yea, but you weren't supposed to start yet, and is Major Thoresen waiting for you?"

The young woman started to think, "Uh, I am not sure, my boss told me to come here to start my work. But he did tell me two days ago, and I couldn't wait, so I packed my things and hopped on the first plane," she smiles.

The woman looks confused, "Ok… I'll get a badge made for you and send you up to the third floor to Major Thoresen's office. Officer Salomon, welcome to Southern California pINPOINt." She hands Officer Salomon the badge, and she thanks her.

Soon Officer Salomon arrives on the third floor and gets off of the elevator, and looks around. She sees a man walk by, "Hey, do you know where Major Thoresen's office is?"

"Yes, it's just up that step to the loft, and it the second door to the right," he said.

"Thank you," she starts heading for the stairs. Soon she arrives at the glass door and knocks on it, and Gudmund looks up from his desk and sees her. He waves her in, and she enters the office and closes the door behind her.

Gudmund got up, "Welcome, I got a call. Someone was stopping by. How may I help you?"

"My name is Officer Ana Sofia Salomon of the Norwegian Intelligence Service. I was sent here by my commanding officer Agent Ralf Lund. Here I got the papers," she handed him the large yellow envelope.

Gudmund took it and opened it up, and looked at the papers inside. After reading, he calls Derek to come into his office. Soon Derek enters, and Gudmund has him read the articles. "So," Derek looks from the papers to Ana. "She is our new liaison officer?" Gudmund nodded. "But I didn't know we were going to get a new one."

"I didn't know as well; I'm going to have Maisie calls, the Director, along with Ana's commanding officer. I want to have a video chat with them both." He grabbed his phone and started to call Maisie, "Maisie, I need to set up a call for me," he said and told her with whom and hung up.

Later they are in the monitor room and already talking to Director Gordon J. Comey and Agent Lund. "Sorry about this, Major Thoresen; Officer Salomon was supposed to leave next month," Agent Lund said.

Gudmund looks from Agent Lund to Director Comey, "Director, when were you going to tell me about a new liaison officer joining my branch?"

"I was going to tell you at the next meeting next week on Wednesday. But I guess sooner is better, I suppose," he said.

Agent Lund looks at Ana, "Ana, I just told you about your transfer just two days ago. So why did you run off to America already?"

"Sorry, sir, but I couldn't wait to be a member of the Major Thoresen team," she answers excitedly.

Agent Lund shook his head, smiling and looking back at them, "Sorry again, but since she is already there, I'll be sure to send her things. Major Thoresen, you'll be happy to have her on your team."

"But I don't have any of her backgrounds, and she is a kid. How many years has she been with the NIS?" Gudmund said.

"I'll send you everything you need to know about Officer Salomon."

"Thank you, but what about my brother Sigmund? I heard he was supposed to return to America?"

"Yes, Agent Lund, I believe Brigadier Niklas Axelsen told me that Colonel Thoresen was going to be returning to pINPOINt," Director Comey said.

"Ah yes, I am afraid he can't; with the joint operation between NIS and Interpol, the case he is with is still going. And Nevel Gustafsson is still out there. He is working with us along with Interpol, NATO, and the MI6. We must keep him and his family in Norway to be safe."

Gudmund sight, "Ok, and I hope to see the file on Officer Salomon," he said, and he had Maisie end the video. He turns to Ana, "Alright, welcome to Southern California pINPOINt, and I'll show you to your desk and your partner you'll be working with."

Later the two stand before a dumbfounded Nozomi in her corner office, "Are you kidding me?" she asks. "I don't need a partner, I may be running the officers by myself here, but I can handle being the sole officer on our team."

"Nozomi, you are going to have a partner ok, this is Officer Ana Salomon, and she will be your partner, and you are to train her on what we do here. So you are getting a partner, got it," he said, and Nozomi crossed her arms and looked away. "Now show her around, and I got to go and do some paper works. So behave," he said and left the two and headed back upstairs. Nozomi looks at Ana, and Ana smiles at her.

Down at autopsy, Butch going over a body from a case that one of his medical examiners is working on; he looks at the file report that the person made. Then, finally, the door opens, and he turns and sees Derek walking into the room. "Derek, what do I own for this visit?"

"I just wanted to go somewhere safe for right now as Gudmund is going to blow up soon," he answers.

Butch looks confused, "Why, what's going on?"

"We gotten a surprise guest, a Norwegian Intelligence Service officer came to join our team. But, unfortunately, she wasn't supposed to come till next month," he said.

"And I guess Gudmund didn't know about this, uh," Derek nodded.

Derek looks at the body, "This is the guy that was running to become the District 7 councilman in Los Angeles."

"Yep, and I am just going over the report on Dr. Gunner's work here."

"Your family lives in district seven, correct?"

"Yep," Butch said and closed the file. "Well, Dr. Gunner did great work on this, and he got everything perfect." He turns to Derek, "So, about this NIS girl."

"Well, the Director was going to tell Gudmund next week on Wednesday at their leader's meeting. But the girl arrives earlier than she was supposed to. And Gudmund learns that Sigmund won't be returning to pINPOINt any time soon."

"I wonder how his family felt when they all learned that Sigmund and his family are alive and in Norway."

"Gudmund told me that Commodore Thoresen almost blew through the roof and almost disowned both Gudmund and Irene for keeping more information from him. While Gudmund's mom was thrilled to have another grandchild and still has her oldest son being alive, the Commodore told Gudmund and Irene that if they do this to them again, he'll disown the two for good and said he would leave everything to the grandkids."

Butch smile, "I keep asking myself how those three manages to grow up with that man as a father." Butch covers the body and turns to Derek, "You know my father was kind to my brother and me, while my mother was the scary person. She would punish all three of us instead of just me and my brother."

"Ma would do the same; the only time my dad would teach my brothers and me a lesson would have us be in a holding cell for a day. Which has happened to us once or twice."

Butch puts the body back in the icebox and closes the door. He turns back to Derek, "So, how are the twins?"

Derek smiles, "Let say they are now sleeping five hours throughout the night. Now Juliana is out of school for the summer, and she loves playing with the two. Juliana is always helping us with the two. She asks if she could take a babysitting class to take care of babies. She even got Astrid and Cameron to join her in the class as well."

"I remember the days of no sleep when each of my kids was born. I wish my kids will go through the same thing once they become parents," Butch said, smiling.

"Yea, my mom says the same thing to my brothers and me. She hopes our kids give us hell as we did to her and my dad. I had only one at the time until now. So Juliana was great, but now she is a teen. I hope it will be an easy road."

"Oh, my brother, it won't be easy. Your daughter will one day want to date and maybe have a boyfriend you might not like. My oldest may be in college, but my second daughter is going to be sixteen this year, and a couple of boys want to date her."

"Well, if any boys want to meet me to date my daughter, my gun will be on the table between us," he said, smiling.

Back with Gudmund in his office, he finishes going through the files on Ana. His phone rings, and he answers it, "Major Thoresen," he said and listened to the person on the other line. "Yes, I already got the paperwork; I got all of the intelligence. I'll send them over as soon as possible, sir," he hangs up and opens a dower in his desk. He pulled out a file, and he got up. He left the office and headed to the stairs to head down. Soon he arrives at the lobby and goes to the front desk, "Ethen, a massager is on his way to pick this up for the Los Angeles County District Attorney. Be sure to check his ID, ok; this is the copy of the Intel we got on one of the biggest cases we got."

"Got it, sir," Ethen said and took the folder. "Oh sir, there was a package delivered to here earlier for Agent Fischer," he said and handed him the package.

"Thanks, I'll be sure to give it to him," Gudmund said and headed for Derek's office. On his way, he came across Derek, "Hey, I was on my way to your office. I was just at the front desk; this came for you," he said and handed the package to Derek.

Derek takes the package and sees that there is no return address, "I wasn't expecting anything," he starts to open it and open a box that is under the paper. Inside is a note that says 'Watch Me' and look at a DVD.

Later they put the DVD in Derek's DVD player in his office and press play. It shows a video of his house, wife, daughter, and twins in their cribs. It shows Hazel going to work and home from work, also shows Juliana walking to her friend's house and back home. Then the screen changed to a shadowy person, "Officer Fischer, or should I say, Agent Fischer," said the person. "I am showing you what I know, and I know where your family goes during the day and who is in your life. I want revenge for what you did, you destroyed my life, and soon I'll take everything from you as well. I will get you for what you did ten years ago." The screen went black, and both Derek and Gudmund stared at the screen.

"Who was that?" Gudmund asks and looks from the TV to Derek.

Derek went to grab his cell and started to call Hazel, "Hello," answered Hazel.

"Hazel, where are you and the kids right now?"

"We are over at Aurora's and Gudmund's house. Why?" she asks.

"All of you are there, right?" he asks, and Hazel answers yes. "Stay there; I am on my way. Don't anyone leave the house?" He hung up and went to get the DVD.

"Whoa, hold on, Derek, we need to figure this out, ok. They are at my house, right?" Gudmund ask.

"Yes, but with that, I need to get to my family. I need to make sure they are ok," he said.

"Alright, we'll both go, and I'll drive. Come on," Gudmund said, and they left the office.

Twenty minutes later, they arrive at Gudmund's house. Derek hugs his family as he is anxious about them. "Sweetie, what's wrong? Are you ok?" Hazel asks.

"Yea, dad, I hadn't seen you like this since I broke my arm back when I was eight," Juliana said.

"I am just happy to see you that all," he said as everyone stared at him. "Um, Juliana, how about you and Astrid take the little ones and go play in Astrid's room," he said, and the kids left.

Once the kids got upstairs, Hazel looked at her husband, "what's wrong?"

"We got a DVD at work, and it showed you and the kids," Gudmund said to Hazel. "It shows the route that you take to and from work. Even the route that Juliana takes to go to her friend's house," he finishes.

Both Hazel and Aurora look shocked, "Who was able to do that and why?" Aurora asks.

"Not sure, but the person said I'd pay for what I did ten years ago," Derek said.

"I already got Maisie looking into it to see who made that DVD," Gudmund said, and his phone started to beep. He looks at it, "I'll be right back. I have got to take this." He got up and went to answer it.

"So, what are we going to do?" Hazel asks as she holds her husband's hand.

Before he could answer, Gudmund returned, "We got a case, and you won't like where it is, Derek, Hazel," Gudmund said as they looked at him.

Forty minutes later, they arrive at a building on Wilshire Blvd. in Los Angeles. It's an apartment building that Derek and Hazel used to live in for a while. Gudmund and Derek arrive at one of the apartments and enter it. It trashed, and a body is lying on the floor in the living room. The apartment is a one-bedroom deluxe apartment. The place is like a studio as there isn't a wall around the bedroom.

"What's the hell happened?" Derek asks.

Nozomi walked up to them, "The attacker didn't break the door in," she started. "The attacker/killer knocked on the door, and the victim went to open the door. Once he opened, that might have been when the attacker attacked the victim."

"What time was the attack?" Gudmund ask.

"It happened around five this morning, which is when someone asked the front desk if anyone was in this room," she finished, and Butch walked up to them.

"Well, I got the body temp; it was just after five and before six. I won't be able to get the full details of the death till I get him on the table." Butch went back to the body and started to get it ready to be placed in the body bag.

"How could this happen here?" Derek asks himself. "Hazel, Juliana, and I used to live here. Hazel's father paid our rents here for us."

"Boss, you might want to get in here," Chelsea calls out from the bathroom.

Gudmund and Derek went into the bathroom and saw an urgent message written in blood in the mirror. "You might want to call Hazel to tell her that you are all going to stay at our house for a while," Gudmund said as he and Derek were shocked by the message.

Later at Thoresen's house, the Fischer family is unpacking their things. In Astrid's room, Astrid is helping Juliana with unpacking. Juliana looks at Astrid, "so I heard that someone asked you out the other day," she said, and Astrid looks at her.

"Uh, it was Jack Goldberg. I told him I wasn't interested in dating anyone at the moment," she said, and someone knocked on her bedroom door. She went to answer it, and it Sakura, "Sakura!" She said, smiling, and hugged her friend.

Sakura went by Juliana, and the two hugged as well, "I heard that you and your family had to move in with Astrid and her family," she said.

"Yea, my dad won't tell me why, though," Juliana said.

Astrid closed the door and went by the two, "I tried to get my dad to tell me as well, but he won't say." Astrid then realizes something and looks at Sakura, confused, "how did you hear that Juliana and her family move in with us?"

"My mom and dad were talking about it on our way here. They said something about an old criminal is stalking your dad," she answers as she turns back to Juliana.

Both Astrid and Juliana look at each other and back at Sakura, "a criminal is stalking my dad?" Juliana asks, and Sakura nods.

"I heard them start talking about it after my dad got a call from Major Thoresen. So then we got into the car and came here to see you guys." Sakura looked at both of her friends, "so your dads didn't say anything to you guys yet?"

"Nope," Astrid answers, "I guess since they called your dad, this person must be dangerous." The girls nodded and went back to helping Juliana unpack. Juliana starts to wonder what will happen to his family or his dad.

Downstairs in Gudmund's office, Gudmund, Derek, and Daisuke are talking. Daisuke looks over the photos and looks at the two, "so you guys want me to look into an old case of Derek?" the two nodded, "Ok, I can try, but why ask me to look into it? I was still a lawyer ten years ago in San Francisco before I moved out here."

"Because after what happened last year with Nevel making a fake release form with your signature on it," Gudmund said. "I am starting to think Nevel might be behind this."

"I tried to think of a criminal I put away ten years ago," Derek said. "I was a beat cop at the time. I arrested lots of people at the time."

Daisuke starts to think, "Ok, I'll see if I can find some of your old case files. But ten years ago is a long time ago. I can try, but are you sure Nevel is involved in this?"

"Not sure yet; he been quiet lately; I think he is keeping a low key for a while," Gudmund said.

"Have you heard from your brother yet?" Daisuke asks, remembering about Sigmund as Gudmund told him he is still alive.

Gudmund shook his head slowly, "No, he is keeping quiet as well. I guess it because Nevel is still out there somewhere. The NIS said they got him on a mission right now. They won't tell me where," he said.

"Well, I'll see if I can find some old case files and send them to Maisie for you," Daisuke said.

"Thanks, and there is one more thing," Gudmund said as he and Derek looked at each other and back to Daisuke.

Meanwhile, back at headquarter, Maisie is looking for any clues from the photos they have given her. She hears Elena walking up to her, "Hey, how did the interview go?" Maisie asks as Elena gets to her side.

"Another one fails; why can't I find a new partner that'll work with me," she answers.

"Don't worry; you'll find one," Maisie answers and turn to her friend. "Why not have Gudmund help you?"

"Because he is already busy and I offer to do the interviews. I want to hire someone that would have my back. Just like how Derek did back when we were partners."

"So, what is wrong with the one you just interviewed?"

"The guy is a major sexist person I have met," Elena said as she felt like throwing up. "I have met three men so far like that, but this one was the worse. I wish my son doesn't grow up like that."

"Cameron will be fine; he got you as his mother and Felix as his father. Whenever I see Cameron, he acts like a sweet gentleman."

Elena smiles and turns back to the monitor, "Thanks, so how are we doing on the case?"

Maisie turns to the monitor, "Well, I went through the past crime files and can't find any matching to the ones that Derek did as a beat cop. Unfortunately, I don't have all of the case files he did ten years ago. Ten years ago, he was living in an apartment with his wife and daughter. They were in the city at the time."

"So, are you saying it could be any gangs that lived in that area before?" Elena asks.

"Yep, but this guy knows Derek, but I think it was someone he once knew. So maybe it wasn't a case he was working on." Maisie notices that Elena is confused. "I mean, he could have been someone that lived in the same apartment when he was living there."

"Maybe I should go and see if I can get a record of who used to live in the building then years ago," Elena said, and Maisie agreed.

"By the way," Maisie turns back to Elena, "How is Nozomi handling having a partner?"

Elena smile, "I just saw them; Nozomi has Ana sitting in the corner of her office. She doesn't want to share a desk or allow her to have a desk."

"Maybe take them with you and try to get them to work together?" Maisie ask.

"I guess so; I'll go and get them and head on out," she said as she started to leave.

Elena stops as she hears beeping on the monitor and turns to it, and so does Maisie. Maisie checks it out, and a message appears on the screen. Maisie starts to read it, "A murder has happened at the end of Smoke Tree Ave in Oak Park. Hope Agent Fischer gets there; so he can see what happened."

"What does that mean? Did a crime happen?" Elena asks.

"Not sure, better call Gudmund and let him know," Maisie said as she started to call her boss.

An hour later, Gudmund and Derek arrived at the house at the end of Smoke Tree Ave and met up with the local police. The local police have already checked out of the house and the area. They see the captain, walk up to him, and show their badges, "Major Thoresen and Agent Fischer," Gudmund said.

"Captain Miller," he introduces himself. "We got the call from your teammate. We came here and checked out the place. A murder did happen, alright. We got one body, but." He stops, "this house is empty as a neighbor told me that the owner moved out about two weeks ago. The house is still up for sale, and well, you might want to see this."

They walk into the house and the living room and see a body in the middle of the space. The body is dressed in a police officer uniform with the badge and everything. "A police officer got killed here," Gudmund said, looking over the dead man's body. "Should have called Butch to come in," he said to look up at Captain Miller. "Captain, can my coroner have the body?"

"Sure, but I am sure the Ventura County coroner would want to work on the body as well," he answers.

"Have them send one of their corners to the pINPOINt Headquarter and work with Doctor Harris," Gudmund said, and Captain Miller nodded. Gudmund turns to Derek and notices a puzzled look on his face, "what is it?"

"I know the badge number, but this isn't the body that belongs to the badge number," he said.

"What?" Gudmund asks, confused, and looks at the body, "Then who is this then?"

A few hours later, back at the Headquarter, Butch is working with Doctor Tyron on the body. They have already got the clothes off and got the fingerprints as well. They are currently looking for the cause of death. "This guy seems like he been eating foods from the trash," said Doctor Tyron as he finished getting everything out of the man's stomach.

"It seems so, and I see he hasn't taken good care of his teeth. This guy is almost like he was homeless or something," Butch said.

A beep starts to be heard on a monitor, and Butch looks up and sees an incoming video call. He clicks on his keyboard to answer it. Chelsea appears on the screen, "Butch, I finished going through the police database. I found no matches to the print, but I sent the search outside of the police database. I found a match," she said.

"Great, what did you find?" Butch asks.

Before Chelsea could answer, Derek entered the room and placed the two doctors' files on the counter. "Chelsea, I believe you were about to say, Cale Overton," he said, and Chelsea nodded.

"How did you know that before she found out?" Dr. Tyron asks.

"Because he was part of an old case of mine from ten years ago," Derek answers. "His partner or former partner was Knox Chester, the brother of the owner of that police badge, Norm Chester."

Chelsea typed up the name on her computer and found the file on Officer Norm Chester, "It said here he died ten years ago," she said over the monitor.

"Right, he was my first partner, and he died at age thirty-four years old. He was on his way to becoming a detective, but he died before he could be one. He was the best on the force. This guy here on the metal bed, he was in prison for a while and wasn't heard from awhile."

"Did Officer Chester have a family of his own?" Butch asks.

"Yes, a wife who he married two years before his death. And the day he died, he found out he was going to be a father." Everyone went quiet for a moment. "I am going to go and let Gudmund know; keep trying to find the cause of death, ok." He left the room, and everyone went back to work. He got to the elevator, and the door opened. He went inside and pressed the up button. He looks at his cell and notices it after midnight. "Ten years ago…yesterday was that day."
