Chapter 6.5: Five, not easy

The female pilot and the woman sit lost in thought, a peaceful silence surrounding them. The place around them quiet as usual.

But . . .

The female pilot feels as though the place has a different vibe to it than five days ago. Looking around at all the planes around her . . . she feels serenity instead of suffocation and calm instead of anxious. She's never experienced the state of mental clarity she is in before.

Looking at her hands, it's such an unfamiliar feeling to her that things feel borderline surreal for her. Her brain sees a path to an endpoint very clearly right now.

She puts her hands back down and caresses the side of the plane slowly, "It isn't easy being a pilot," she starts slowly.

"Is this about what I said yesterday?" asks the woman. She seems to be in the same state of mind as the female pilot. But not completely there yet, something was missing, it isn't complete.

"Yes. I didn't say anything of the sort yesterday because my training taught me that it would have been an inappropriate time," explains the female pilot.

"Training? What's that like?"

"Before we go out to the void or have positions on the Rope, all pilots go through a mandatory training period of their existence. The training is about various things; like how a pilot is use their powers, one of them is teaching actions and words in situations a pilot might find themselves in with a passenger," as the female pilot replies, silence falls around them.

Giving in to the urge to continue, the female pilot clarifies, "But that's just training to make it easier on us when we go through the actual scenario. That doesn't mean that we don't necessarily feel anything and just repeat dialogue like robots. The training is just to help us find the right words to say . . . at the right place and time, with a scenario,"

"I see," says the woman, a smile on her face, "Tell me more,"

"Well in my short time, it isn't just me. I have seen many of my brothers get insulted, sabotaged, abused and sometimes even full-on attacked when they try to do their job and deliver the message. And even back home at the Rope, I see they have huge responsibilities on their back. Especially since they all tend to be very protective of their seven sisters. They always take the front lines for us," she explains

"Seven sisters? Why are there only seven?" asks the woman.

"Well, there are only seven female pilots. My mother and I are just two of them,"

"What, really? I never knew this! I thought there would be more since I've heard there are like thousands of pilots," exclaims the woman.

"Yeah, I do have a lot of brothers, I guess," says the female pilot, chuckling. "I haven't met them all but of the few that I have, they are always very committed and hard-working. And with some . . . with some I am close enough to know all the troubles and problems they have but they don't talk about them. They always have a smile on their face and push forward. I want to be like them . . . like her,"

The woman falls silent, "I'm sorry for what I said. I guess it's not easy for anyone," she says quietly.

. . .

The female pilot wakes up and finds that a short amount of time has passed. But . . . the sensations she felt have vanished. She looks at her hand again.

"How can I keep it?" she contemplates as she gets up to check on the woman.
