By now his father had made his way over and nervously scratched the back of his neck with one hand, while he held out the other as he said, "I'm sorry too Rebecca. My name is Richard, Anthony's father. But I guess you already realized that by now." Rebecca was preparing another set of 'No, no, no's when Anthony finally came to her rescue. He chuckled before he made his way over to Rebecca's side. He put his hand on her shoulder, which caused her to look up at him. In that moment Rebecca wasn't aware of where she was or who were there as well. She was simply looking at him with infatuated eyes, waiting to hear what he wanted to say, while his mom had covered her mouth in a gasp.
Anthony then said, "Don't worry mom and dad. Rebecca isn't one to get upset or hold a grudge over something like this. If anyone knows anything about nerves getting the best of someone, it is her, right Rebecca?" Letting out another chuckle as he looked at Rebecca. Rebecca looked away in embarrassment, while Anthony looked back at his parents and said, "Besides, if anyone messed up, it's me. I just walked off with dad without introducing her to you two. But that brings us to the main activity of today. Let's head into the living room, because I have some exciting news."
By now both of Anthony's parents had a pretty good idea of what their son was going to tell them, but even with all of these hints, they would still be wrong with their assumption. Because no one in their sane minds would do what Anthony and Rebecca had chosen to do. Making it become something no parent would expect of their child.
Just as suggested, they all took a seat on the couch in Anthony's parents' living room, and when Anthony and Rebecca had their undivided attention Anthony leaned in and with an excited voice said, "Mom, dad, as you now know, this is Rebecca, and she is the girl I want to marry". While his parents were flabbergasted at their son's announcement, Anthony continued and disclosed the entire truth to get all of their shock over and done with in one go. "In fact, she and I got engaged yesterday."
Anthony grabbed Rebecca's hand and showed his parents the family heirloom that was on her finger, proving to them that their son was speaking the truth. Their eyes went from the ring, to their son and back to the ring. Being fully overcome by surprise, not knowing what to say or how to respond. A moment Anthony was happy to use. "We came here today to get your blessing. Although I suppose it is a bit too late, seeing as we already got engaged, and I don't plan on breaking it off. But it would mean a lot to both of us if you could accept Rebecca as your daughter-in-law. Now I know that you two don't know her, but that is what we have the next couple of days for. You can ask anything that comes to mind, and both I and Rebecca will do our best to answer your questions. So, what do you say?"
Having said all he needed to say, Anthony was now ready to hear his parents' answer. Seeing the dear staring in headlights look on their faces, Rebecca was beginning to second-guess her earlier surge of confidence. Wondering if she had gotten comfortable a bit too soon. But then their expressions started to thaw and change into what Anthony had predicted. The shock made place for a beaming smile and the staring turned into Susan reaching over the table to hug Rebecca, who was not expecting that at all, causing her to freeze up and stare at Anthony in confusion. He simply grinned and gave her a thumbs up, before he grabbed his father's hand, which had been reached out to him. The moment he held his hand, Anthony was pulled into a hug tight enough to crack his bones.
Rebecca could not hear a thing anyone was saying. Although she could hear the sounds, they weren't registering into words. She was so shellshocked from the sudden change in Anthony's parents' reaction. She just stared at them, as they were congratulating their son and speaking in loud, excited voices. Hugging her and Anthony, over and over again. Then she started crying, causing everyone to immediately halt in their movement. Anthony's mom asked her in a worried tone, "What's wrong honey? Why are you crying? I promise we won't object. You have a 100% of our blessings." Anthony himself too looked at her with a look of concern, but when he noticed the smile, he realized that they weren't tears of sadness, but those of relief and joy!
