A strong sting in her nose woke her up, as black thick clouds were obstructing her sight and breathing. Her whole body was in pain, everything was aching and she could barely move her feet. She was almost losing her consciousness when suddenly someone grabbed her top and started dragging her away from the smoke until she fainted.
"So, Matthew could you finish the repair in time?"
"Yea just in time, I hope it'll hold for a little while at least. Did you ever drive a bike?"
"Quite some time ago but yes I did use to drive a bike now and then."
"Good otherwise we would have needed to re-think our whole plan."
"And what about you guys did you say your goodbyes to the bus?"
"O' Course we didn't, we're gonna get it back afterwards!"
The sun was already going down, when they concluded with the preparations, engulfing the already yellow desert into an orange light. If it wasn't for this situation they might've even considered enjoying the beautiful landscape while taking some postcard-worthy pictures and lay back. But no one was able to relax in such a situation, more like the opposite, everyone's tension was clearly displayed on their faces staring right in front of them.
"Now then, I'll go and do my job so you guys better do yours"
"Bet' ya that we'll do that and ya better don't get yarself caught."
With a simple nod with her head, she sneaked towards the small wooden hut not knowing how to even get their attention without making it a too obvious bait. As soon as she got near enough she decided to just go for it and instinctively picked up a small stone in order to throw it with all her strength against the entrance. The noise should have been heard by everyone, therefore she already started to distance herself, in order to get a head start.
"What was that, did you hear that." One of the gangster's voices could be heard through the planks.
The door opened with a loud screech and coming out of the small shed was one of the thugs. After looking left and right he immediately spotted her.
"Ah, there is that damn bitch that escaped."
She immediately started running in the opposite direction of where the others were hiding and directed her pursuers far away from the hut. When she felt confident of having reached a good distance between them she took a moment to catch some breath and look back. They were still following her. Good. But only now she noticed that it wasn't all three of them but only two.
"I hope the guys are okay, they'll need to take care of the last one themselves."
Every step that she took cost her valuable endurance and breath while her two pursuers slowly started to catch up on her. Noticing that the distance gradually became smaller and smaller, she decided to head for the bike that was hidden behind a small hill. Relentless heavy breathing came out of her mouth as she tried to gasp for more air, she was at her limit. Now she could only hope that it would take them long enough to get back to their hut in order for her friends to take the helicopter and liberate Brian. But her thoughts were immediately interrupted when one of her pursuers pulled out a gun and started blasting, something they didn't plan for.
"Oh, shit, shit, shit!"
One bullet landed right in the cactus next to her. Before any more shots could be fired in her direction she jumped down the hill where the bike was waiting. She quickly stood up and sprinted to the motorbike and hopped on. The moment she started the engine her pursuers had already reached the top of the hill.
*bang*
Another shot was fired and this time it hit. A strong burning pain on her thigh went through all of her body letting her scream out in pain. She quickly turned up the gas to full speed leaving behind a whole cloud of dust and even though other shots were fired nothing came even close to her.
"Damn those guys just wildly shooting around with a gun, I hope they rot in hell"
As Matthew had predicted the fuel didn't hold for too long, and so she was forced to walk towards the meeting point they had established beforehand. Luckily the shot only grazed her but it still hurt and made her limp on every step she took with the right leg, leaving behind her a small trail of blood.
Even the last sunlight was gone by the time she finally arrived at the rendezvous point, but no helicopter or any one of the other people was in sight.
"I really hope that they could make it otherwise we'll all be fucked... ugh."
Her hands were continuously pressing on the wound while she sat down on a small rock to wait. She looked up and gazed at the stars shining bright in the night sky.
"Now that I remember, Matthew mentioned something like, he came out here since today was going to be a meteor shower to watch or something like that."
It was like her eyes were drawn in on the small dots in the sky when one particularly big star caught her attention. Only now did she notice the chopping sound of a helicopter echoing throughout the plains.
"Sorry for making you wait. Did you by chance order a taxi?"
With one little jump, she hopped on the helicopter, sat down and closed her eyes, the loud sound slowly faded away and when she re-opened them she was lying on a bed.
