The Hoenn Grand Festival
It wasn't long till the gang finally made it to Slateport City, where the Hoenn Grand Festival was being placed. And they made it to the area where the stadium for the Grand Festival stood.
"Wow," May awed, "I can't believe that we're really here at the Hoenn Grand Festival stadium."
"We're here all right." Ashlyn laughed.
There were hotels and restaurants surrounding the stadium and they were where the contestants and their guests were going to stay and eat during the Hoenn Grand Festival.
"With us being here all ready, it feels like only yesterday that we started collecting ribbons, May." Ashlyn commented.
"You're right, Ashlyn." May agreed.
The gang headed for the contest hall, where Ashlyn and May had to register. The lady at the desk scanned Ashlyn's ribbons and registered her in with her Rotom phone and did the same for May with her Pokédex. Then she gave them both a guidebook which explained the rules of the contest tournament and had maps of the stadium and where restaurants were.
After the registering was done, the gang headed over to the door rooms, where they would be staying. The door rooms were outside the stadium, and surprisingly enough they were so big they were like hotels.
"Wow, I can't believe that we'll be staying here." May beamed happily.
"You should see what the dorm rooms are like that the Pokémon leagues." Ashlyn commented.
"Yeah, those rooms were glamorous as well." Brock agreed.
"Surprise!" A female voice spoke out behind May which caused her to scream.
Everyone turned to female voice and were surprised who it was; it was Caroline.
"Mom?! What are you doing here?!" May gasped.
"Well I'm here to see my daughter participate in the Hoenn Grand Festival." Caroline answered, smiling.
"Is dad here too?" Max asked.
"He wanted to come too but he couldn't leave the gym. Although he did say he would watch it all on TV." Caroline replied.
Caroline and the gang checked out the rooms they were staying in, and May was like over the moon. The rooms were big and luxurious, and they had a big view of the ocean, even Ashlyn, Alain, Brock and Max were impressed.
"Come on May, we better see what the rules are for this tournament." Ashlyn suggested.
Brock took a good look through the guidebook and looked at the rules. "Well for starters," he began, "Like the Rubello Contest you use different Pokémon in each round of the tournament. Second you have to pass the preliminary rounds to get into the main tournament and get this; only 64 trainers out of 247 trainers will pass the preliminaries."
Ashlyn and May were surprised by that.
"Well then May, you and I will have to practice then," Ashlyn decided, "that way both of us can pass the preliminary rounds."
"How can you be so calm, Ashlyn?" May asked, surprised.
"Because they had something like this at the Silver Conference in Johto." Ashlyn replied, calmly.
She explained that only 48 trainers out of 200 trainers, including her, made it into the main tournament in the Silver Conference.
"Gosh, so Pokémon leagues have tough rules too huh?" May commented.

Ashlyn and May decided to practice for the preliminary rounds at once since they wanted to pass the preliminary rounds. So everyone went outside so Ashlyn and May could figure what to do. May introduced Caroline to her Combusken, Beautifly, Skitty, Bellossom, Azumarill and Altaria.
"Wow May," Caroline awed at her daughter's Pokémon, "these six Pokémon look wonderful. And I saw your other Pokémon; Bulbasaur, Plusle, Minun, Volbeat, Illumise, Starmie, Lileep and Munchlax at Prof. Birch's lab when I last spoke to him on the video phone and all of them looked wonderful."
"Take a good look at my new Pokémon, mum." Max said. He showed off his newest Pokémon, Beldum, to Caroline.
"Wow Max your Beldum is lovely," Caroline smiled, "both you and May have got wonderful Pokémon."
Just then at that moment Drew walked up to the gang.
"I see you made it here huh May?" Drew asked.
"Yes, Drew I did," May replied, "and so did Ashlyn."
She and Ashlyn showed Drew their five ribbons.
"Impressive, but I doubt you'll be going home with the Ribbon Cup." Drew taunted.
"We shall see about that, Drew." May said, crossly.
"Is Drew a friend of May's?" Caroline asked.
"No, Drew is a rival and that he likes to boast about being a great Pokémon coordinator." Max replied.
Suddenly Harley appeared.
"May, Ashlyn, I must congratulate you on getting into the Hoenn Grand Festival." Harley congratulated them, cheerfully.
"Thanks, but now we have to get going. May and I have to start training." Ashlyn said.
"That's right." May agreed.
"See ya' around, Harley." Ashlyn said.
Caroline and the gang walked away from Harley, leaving him alone.
May sighed, "Why does Harley have to be here?" She asked.
"He's a coordinator, May. It would be obvious." Ashlyn replied.
May sighed again.
"Who was that Harley?" Caroline asked.
"Harley is a deceitful type of person. He's a coordinator who tried to embarrass May during a contest." Max explained.
"It would be best not to trust him at all." Alain advised.
"Ashlyn, please make sure you tell me if Harley is going to try and trick me again." May whispered.
"Certainly." Ashlyn said.
Ashlyn and May were certainly not going to let Harley ruin their time at the grand festival.

It wasn't long now till the Hoenn Grand Festival had begun. Caroline, Alain, Brock and Max were with the audience, and Ashlyn and May were in the waiting room with the other contestants. Three judges were judging the preliminary rounds. Vivian, who was the announcer for the Hoenn Grand Festival, welcomed everyone and explained about the preliminary rounds; she explained that the contestants had to use Pokémon and the Pokémon could only use one move, and she explained that only 64 out of 200 contestants could pass onto the main tournament. The contestants started to show off their Pokémon; there was a Zigzagoon doing Shadow Ball, Robert's Milotic gleamed after it came out of the Pokéball, Drew's Roselia used Petal Dance while spinning, Harley had his Cacturne show off its Bullet Seed, May had her Beautifly use Silver Wind and Ashlyn had Tesla use Electro Ball. This went on until all 200 contestants had shown off their Pokémon.

The results soon came and Ashlyn and May made it into the main tournament, and so did Drew, Harley, and Robert.
"Phew I'm glad we made it, Ashlyn." May sighed in relief.
"Yeah, but it's not over yet because we still have some more rounds to get through." Ashlyn reminded May.
May knew that Ashlyn was right, but she was still happy that she passed the preliminary rounds.

It was soon the next day. Today was the start of the main tournament. The guidebook said that the first round was the appeal rounds and just like a regular contest the contestant had to use one Pokémon for the appeal round. It also pointed out only 32 contestants could go to the battle matches.

Ashlyn, Alain and Max were on a training field. Ashlyn was checking out Sumire (Grumpig), Miku (Gardevoir), Hagane (Aggron), Ula (Shiny Milotic) and Brynja (Armaldo).
"Which one will you use in the Appeal Round, Ashlyn?" Alain asked.
"I've decided with Brynja for this round." Ashlyn replied.
"Awe, what will you have Brynja do?" Max asked, excitedly.
"You'll see." Ashlyn smiled.
At that moment, a boy with blue-green hair came up to Ashlyn, Alain and Max.
"You have some great Pokémon there." he said.
"Thank you." Ashlyn thanked the boy.
The boy introduced himself as Anthony and he was a coordinator too. Beside him was a purple Pokémon with long whiskers and it looked like a big blob.
Ashlyn looked at the Pokémon on her Rotom Phone:
[Swalot, the poison bag Pokémon. The evolved form of Gulpin. It gulps anything that fits in its mouth. Its special enzymes can dissolve anything.]
"So Anthony, I take it you're in the Grand Festival too?" Ashlyn asked.
"Oh yes and I made it to the main tournament like you, Ashlyn," Anthony said, "and I can't wait to see your Pokémon in action."
"I was about to say the same thing." Ashlyn commented.
This meant Ashlyn had to deal with another rival in the Hoenn Grand Festival.

Later that day it was time for the appeal rounds in the Hoenn Grand Festival. Raoul Contesta, Mr. Suziko and three Nurse Joys were the judges, and Vivian explained how the appeal round works, about only 32 contestants could pass the appeal rounds and she showed off the ribbon cup. And she also showed off a silver ribbon in a frame; this was a prize for the runner-up of the Grand Festival. Ember and May were in the waiting room with the other contestants, waiting for their turn. Tesla was with Caroline, Alain, Brock and Max in the audience because Ashlyn wasn't using Tesla.
"You all right, May?" Ashlyn asked.
"Bit nervous, but Starmie and I are ready to go." May replied.
"Brynja is ready too." Ashlyn said.
Harley tried to get all friendly with Ashlyn and May again, but they ignored him. Drew was acting the usual with his 'bring it on' face.

The appeal round was soon on the way. First there was a Ninetails using flamethrower. Next was Harley and his Banette did Will-o-Wisp and Thunder; putting on a creepy performance. Next was an Alakazam using Psychic, a Vaporeon using Water Gun, a Ledian using Swift, a Sunflora using Ingrain, an Electrode using Thunderbolt and a Lickitung showing off its long tongue. Ashlyn and May saw everything on the TV screen in the waiting room.
'Wow the competition is tough.' May thought.
'These coordinators are good.' Ashlyn thought.
Then it was Anthony's turn. He had his Swalot use Sludge Bomb and Bullet Seed; the Bullet Seed made the Sludge Bomb break into smoke. Then to finish it off, Anthony had Swalot use swallow to swallow the smoke. Next was May and she sent out her Starmie. She told it to use Swift and Psychic. Starmie's psychic made the stars circle around Starmie like a planet's ring. To finish it off May told Starmie to use Rapid Spin and the Rapid Spin broke the stars into yellow particles. Next it was Drew and he showed off his Masquerain's Bubble and Gust attacks. Next it was Ashlyn. She started things off by having Brynja use Sword Dance, then Brynja used Rock Slide and then she used Metal Claw and Iron Tail to break the rocks apart. This went on and on until all 64 contestants showed off their Pokémon.
"Phew! I'm glad that's over." May said, feeling exhausted.
"You and Starmie did really well, May." Ashlyn complimented her.
Just then Drew came up. "It's clear that you are better than when you started as a coordinator, May," he said, "but you'll have to do better than that if you want to become top coordinator."
May puffed her cheeks. "I'll have you know Drew I have been practicing a lot for this thank you." she said, crossly.
Drew chuckled.
Just then the results were up, and May and Ashlyn got into the battle rounds, and so did Robert, Drew, Anthony, and Harley. Caroline, Alain, Brock and Max were happy for Ashlyn and May. Then the screen showed who will battle against whom in the first round of the double battle matches. By surprise, May would battle Harley in the first round and Ashlyn would battle a girl named Angelica.
"May, be careful of Harley. He won't show any mercy in this battle." Ashlyn whispered to May.
"Then I'll shall show him no mercy either." May whispered back.
Ashlyn could easily tell that May really wanted to give Harley a piece of her mind this time.

It was now time for the battle rounds of the Hoenn Grand Festival to begin. May had won against Harley. She had her Bulbasaur and Volbeat defeat Harley's Cacturne and Banette. Harley was really crossed that he lost to May and earned the spot of Top 32 in the Grand Festival. After his loss, he returned his Pokémon and walked out of the stadium in a huff. The gang was glad that May had won against Harley.

A few matches after that it was Ashlyn's match against Angelica. From what Ashlyn could tell, Angelica was completely arrogant and rude towards others which she could easily tell from that smirk of hers. But Ashlyn would make sure that she'll show no mercy towards Angelica.
"Electabuzz, Ampharos, let's spark!" Angelica sent out her Electabuzz and her Ampharos.
"Libelle, Hestia, come on out!" Ashlyn sent out Libelle (Shiny Flygon) and Hestia (Shiny Blaziken).
"Electabuzz, use Thunderbolt on Blaziken!" Electabuzz launched its electric attack at Hestia.
"Libelle, take that attack! Hestia, use Bulk Up!" While Hestia bulked herself up, Libelle flew in front of Hestia and let the thunderbolt hit her; as Libelle was part ground type, the electric attack didn't do anything to her at all.
Angelica lost points from the electric attack not harming Libelle.
"All right then Ampharos you use Thunder Punch on Blaziken and Electabuzz you use Focus Punch on Flygon!" Ampharos and Electabuzz ran over to Libelle and Hestia, ready to punch them.
"Libelle, use Screech!" Libelle screamed such a loud screech that it stopped Electabuzz and Ampharos in their tracks.
"Now use Flamethrower, Hestia!" Hestia blew Flamethrower at both Electabuzz and Ampharos and they got really hurt by the Flamethrower.
Because the move 'Bulk Up' boosted Hestia's attack and defense, Hestia's flamethrower was stronger. Angelica lost all of her points from that and lost the round.
Angelica was crossed with her loss. She returned her Pokémon and walked out of the stadium in a huff.

Anthony, Drew, Robert and another nine trainers also defeated their opponents to get into the Top 16 rounds. Now Caroline and the gang were in the Pokémon center so Ashlyn and May could heal Hestia, Libelle, Bulbasaur and Volbeat.
May let out a sigh, "Phew, I have only done one match and I already feel like I want to collapse." She said.
"Hang in there May," Ashlyn encouraged her. "There are still a few more matches to go if we want to reach the finals."
Just then the results for the next battle matches came up on the screen in the Pokémon center. May was against Anthony and Ashlyn was against a girl named Madison. The Top 16 battle rounds weren't until tomorrow, so Ashlyn and May could rest up tonight.
Ashlyn and May had made it through the first battle round, but if they wanted to earn the title of Top Coordinator there was still some matches to go.

Next morning Ashlyn was outside on a training ground with Alain and Tesla. The next battle round wasn't until later, so Ashlyn used this time to do a little training. She decided to help Warrin perfect his Ice Beam attack.
Ashlyn called out Warrin the Snorunt. "Come on Warrin, we're going to have you master your Ice Beam attack today."
Warrin obviously couldn't wait to get started.
"Alright then, Ula come on out!" Ashlyn released her shiny Tender Pokémon.
Ula the Shiny Milotic appeared.
"Okay Ula, show Warrin your Ice Beam." Ashlyn instructed.
Ula fired an Ice Beam at a rock and the rock froze.
"Okay Warrin, now it's your turn." Ashlyn said.
Warrin had a go at trying to freeze a rock with ice beam, but the control was terrible, and Warrin froze a bush.
"This is going to take a while if we want you to master Ice Beam, Warrin." Alain stated.
"Snorunt." Warrin agreed.
"I thought that was you, Ashlyn." said a voice.
Ashlyn and Alain turned to the voice and saw the source was Robert.
"Hi Robert, nice to see you again." Ashlyn greeted.
"Same here, Ashlyn." Robert agreed. He saw Ashlyn's shiny Milotic, "Ah, I see you have a Milotic as well and a shiny one too. I'm impressed."
"Thank you, Robert." Ashlyn thanked him.
"You are training your Pokémon for the battle rounds this afternoon, Ashlyn?" Robert asked.
"What I'm really doing is helping, Warrin, my Snorunt, master Ice Beam," Ashlyn answered, "but he is having trouble controlling it."
"Let me see Warrin use Ice Beam, maybe I can see what's wrong." Robert requested.
Ashlyn could easily tell that Robert was a kind trainer who was glad to help out trainers with their Pokémon.
"Warrin, try Ice Beam again." Ashlyn said.
Warrin did an Ice Beam attack again, and again he froze a bush rather than a rock.
"I see, Warrin does have a problem with controlling his Ice Beam attack," Robert understood, "does he know any other attacks?"
Ashlyn and Warrin showed Robert Warrin's Ice Shard, Powder Snow and Icy Wind attacks.
"Those are good," Robert complimented, "Warrin had complete control over those attacks. Let me speak to Warrin."
"Alright." Ashlyn said.
Robert knelt down to Warrin's side, "Warrin, you need to focus all on your energy, in your head, when using Ice Beam."
"Come on Warrin, let's try Ice Beam one more time." Ashlyn requested.
Tesla and Ula encouraged Warrin to try again too. So Warrin tried to use Ice Beam again, and this time he succeeded on freezing a rock instead of something else.
"You did it Warrin, you mastered your Ice Beam attack!" Ashlyn cheered.
Tesla and Ula cheered for Warrin too.
Suddenly Warrin started to glow, and then it grew into a white and black sphere-shaped Pokémon, with two black horns, big eyes and big teeth.
Ashlyn scanned Warrin with her Rotom phone:
[Glalie, the face Pokémon. The evolved form of Snorunt. To protect itself, it clads its body in an armor of ice, made by freezing moisture in the air.]
"Thank you for helping us, Robert." Ashlyn thanked him.
"You're welcome, Ashlyn," Robert said, "but there's something I would like to ask you."
"What is it?" Ashlyn asked.
"I would like to have a battle with your Latias if we challenge each other." Robert requested.
"I would be glad to." Ashlyn accepted.
"Thank you, Ashlyn. I like to warn you I have trained my Claydol well to fight against your Latias." Robert warned.
"I look forward to it, Robert." Ashlyn said.
She and Robert had now become friendly rivals with each other.

Sometime later the Top 16 battle round was on the way. Ashlyn had battled and won now against a girl named Linda who used a Venomoth and a Politoed. Ashlyn used Jacinth (Sableye) and Ziggy (Linoone). Next, May had battled Anthony. Anthony used his Swablu and a Pinsir and May used Combusken and Azumarill. Anthony turned out to be quite a good battler, especially with his Swalot. But once the time was up, May had more points than Anthony and May won. Drew and Robert also defeated their opponents easily.

Caroline and the gang were now at the Pokémon Center.
"I must say May, you have improved a lot on your battling skills." Caroline complimented her daughter.
"Thanks mum," May said, "and I have Ashlyn and Alain to thank for that. Especially with their other Pokémon on helping my Pokémon learn new moves."
"I find it wonderful," Caroline smiled, "Before, you hated Pokémon because you were afraid of them."
"Not only that, but she also didn't know a thing about them and clearly had no idea how capturing and battling Pokémon worked." Max teased.
"Hey! I like Pokémon now and I have learnt a lot thank you!" May defended, embarrassed.
"Well you have come a long way, May." Alain commented.
"Embarrassing as it is, May, they're right. The shy and nervous Pokémon trainer I met at Prof. Birch's lab has grown and experienced a lot throughout our journey." Ashlyn stated, "So you've done great along your journey, May."
"I have to agree." Brock agreed with the others.
"Thanks you guys." May smiled brightly at her friends.
At that moment, the results for the matches in the Top 8 round came up. By surprise May's next opponent was Drew.
"Oh my, I'm up against Drew." May said.
May felt a bit nervous by this, especially since she hasn't faced Drew since the Slateport City contest, but she knew she had to face him sooner or later.

In the end, May had lost against Drew. She had her Combsuken and Altaria against his Roselia and Flygon. Although she was bummed, she was glad that her Pokémon did a great battle. As a good sport, she also congratulated Drew. To her surprise, the audience gave her a big round of applause of how her and her Pokémon battled. So Drew was the winner and May came in Top 8 of the Hoenn Grand Festival.
Ashlyn defeated Linda and her Pokémon, Beautifly and Gorebyss with Kazuki (Sceptile) and Shula (Torkoal).

So now the gang were resting in the Pokémon center after the Top 8 rounds were finished.
"How are you feeling, May?" Ashlyn asked.
"Well I must admit I had hoped that I would win in this tournament." May admitted.
"I'm sorry, May. But Top 8 isn't so bad for your first time in a Grand Festival, May. Be proud of that. At least you beat Harley." Ashlyn assured her.
"Ashlyn is right May," Caroline agreed, "you should be proud of yourself of what you've achieved."
"Yeah and you can train hard again for the next Grand Festival." Ashlyn suggested. "Just like what I'm doing now for the Hoenn League."
"You're right Ashlyn," May agreed, "I will just continue working hard till I become a Top Coordinator."
Caroline and the others were happy to hear that.

The next day it was time for the Top 4 battle round and Robert and Drew were paired up in the first match. Ashlyn and a boy named Jason. Drew did the best he could with his Roselia and Masquerain, but Robert's Roselia and Claydol were stronger. Ashlyn had won against Jason with his Pokémon which were Grumpig and Groyvle with Willow (Beautifly) and Warrin (Glalie).

Soon enough, it was the finals. The last two were Ashlyn and Robert. Everyone was excited at this. Caroline and the rest of the gang were in the audience watching the final battle.
Robert sent out his Claydol and Milotic and Ashlyn sent out Serenity and Lela.
"Milotic, use Aqua Tail! Claydol, Psybeam!" Milotic launched its Aqua Tail and Claydol with its Pysbeam.
"Lela, use Dark Pulse! Serenity, use Thunder Shock!" Lela and Serenity fired Dark Pulse and Thunder Shock towards Milotic's Aqua Tail and Claydol's Psybeam.
The four attacks clashed against each other, causing an explosion on small specks of light to float around.
"Move in with Shadow Claw, Serenity! Lela, you use Iron Tail!" Serenity quickly struck Claydol with Shadow Claw and Lela struck Milotic with Iron Tail.
"You're clearly a great battler, Ashlyn," Robert smiled, "I think this will be the greatest Pokémon battle I ever had."
Ashlyn smiled back, "I was about to say the same to you, Robert."

"I think Robert is enjoying this." Max commented.
"Well Robert has been waiting for the day that we would have a rematch with Ashlyn, so it's no wonder." Alain stated.
"Well it's starting to become an interesting battle so far." Brock commented.
May felt like this battle was going to be like the battle she had with Drew.

Ashlyn and Robert went on at each other with their Pokémon. Serenity and Lela really showed Robert of how strong they were especially with their signature moves Mist ball and Dark Pulse. But Robert was no pushover either and neither was his Milotic and Claydol. Before everyone knew it both Ashlyn and Robert lost all of their points together, and even though it looked like a draw, the winner was...
"Our winner and Top Coordinator is...Ashlyn Ketchum!" Vivian announced.
The crowd cheered at the results.
Ashlyn was shocked at the moment. She couldn't believe it. She had won the Hoenn Grand Festival. It was somewhat unexpecting, but she was happy for the result. Then she, Lela, and Serenity bowed towards the crowd.
Serenity and Lela came over to her. She petted Serenity and Lela on the head, "Great job, you two. I'm so proud of you."
"Growl/(Thank you, Ashlyn)." Lela and Serenity trilled.
"That was a great battle, Ashlyn." Robert complimented.
"I'm glad you enjoyed it." Ashlyn said.
"You're a great battler. I hope you do well in the Hoenn League." Robert wished.
"I hope so as well." Ashlyn prayed.

"Folks, that concludes this year's Grand Festival, and it was one to remember with all the drama and beauty can hope to see." Vivian announced.
"A splendid performance, Ashlyn." Raoul Contesta stood in front of Ashlyn with Lela and Serenity on either side of her.
"I couldn't have won without the help of my Pokémon." Ashlyn stated.
Lela and Serenity smiled.
"Indeed. I hope to see you in another contest soon." Raoul wished.
"I'll try." Ashlyn promised.
Raoul Contesta handed the Ribbon Cup to Ashlyn.
"Our champion, Ashlyn, has accepted the Ribbon Cup and will now proudly carry the title of 'Top Coordinator'!" Vivian announced.
So Ashlyn was the winner of the Hoenn Grand Festival, and the winner of the Ribbon Cup and Robert earned the Silver Ribbon for becoming the runner-up.
"You're all invited to closing ceremonies at the park tonight! So from the main stage here in Slateport City I bid you all farewell!" Vivian announced.

When the grand festival was over, a party was held for the coordinators. May enjoyed the party a lot, even though she didn't win the festival.
"Congrads on winning first place, Ashlyn." Alain said.
"Thanks, Alain." Ashlyn smiled.
"You and your Pokémon were really great out there, Ashlyn." May commented.
"So were you, May." Ashlyn stated.
May smiled at that. Suddenly Drew came up to her, "Down because you didn't win, May?" he asked.
"Yeah, you?" May asked.
"Yeah, but I'm going to train hard for the next grand festival." Drew replied.
"Me too," May declared, "I'm not going to give up until I earn the title of Top Coordinator."
"Well I hope to see you here next year at the Grand Festival." Drew said.
"Don't worry, I'll be there, Drew." May promised.
Drew smiled at that, "Well then, see ya' later, May." He waved goodbye and walked away.
May let out a sigh.
"Something wrong, May?" Ashlyn asked.
"Drew just gave me something to think about." May replied.
"Something?" Brock asked.
"Drew helped me realize that I can be really good at this if I keep working hard. So I that's why I made the decision to do just that. I won't quit until I become the Top Coordinator." May declared.
"We're glad to hear you say that, May." Max said.
"Just remember, if you ever need help, we'll be sure to help." Ashlyn pointed out.
"Don't worry, I will, Ashlyn." May assured her.

Later on, everyone began enjoying the rest of the party. Caroline and the gang were proud of Ashlyn's achievement. The next day, Caroline then said to the gang that she had to get back to Petalburg City now, and she wished Ashlyn luck in the Hoenn League.
