I still remember

Chapter 7

~midnight, December 6years ago~

I stood at the bus station with my raincoat on, it was late…my first night shift as a fully qualified doctor. He walked up to me with his umbrella shielding the both of us from the rain as we hopped into a taxi, I stared at him all night before falling asleep on his shoulder. We missed our anniversary that year because I had to work…

“im sorry I missed it again…”

“it doesn’t matter you had work, work comes first, ”he says wrapping me in his arms

I couldn’t tell if Areeb was being genuine or covering up for what he was doing behind it back, I missed Valentines, then eid, eventually work was the only thing I had in mind. Then I found them together, in our house snuggling on my coach the exact same couch I had spent two years saving for, I grabbed her by the hair kicking her out of my house…he stood there with mocking eyes.

“explain yourself!” I say bursting into an emotional wreck

“ Only you know why I turned into this…” he said pushing me aside leaving the house.

And then I never saw him again, or I did for his divorce outbursts and me forcing him to rather join me for couples therapy, but that woman…I hope he’s happy.

Little memories like that lived in my mind rent-free, I was happy…satisfied and believed that we were soul mates…you can question how all of that lead to reflection, couples therapy then him leaving. I never blamed him…never questioned him, I just prayed and hoped and held him back. I was the villain in our marriage…

“ Is there anything else you would like?”I asked closing my office door

“I just wanted to thank you, I should’ve treated you better now that im in your shoes.”

“Depends, either way. It's in the past, only contact me for work reasons.”

I leave his office, it felt good putting my foot down. There was no need for his stupid appreciation or sympathy sessions especially if he did none of that in the past.

Daneen waited at the sports field with her bag laid on the floor. He was late as usual, she rolled her eyes watching him run towards her, smacking him on his back as they both walked into the cricket field, back in high school they were both the captains, Daneen led the females and Basaam for the males. He was always one step ahead of her and she hated him for always beating her at her own game. They went against each other with their old teammates, laughing and arguing through the day and after an amazing hit from Daneen, a six. She hopped out of the field smashing the bat onto the ground as Basaam walked over smiling.

“ well done, doesn’t erase the fact that we beat you almost every single day back in high school.”

“ sore loser, stop being so sour about losing to almost middle-aged woman. You guys let yourselves go.”

“We made our cash, now all that’s left is to find our queens and settle down.”

“Got anyone in mind?” She said pouting

“ she’s a little scary but the most beautiful woman I’ve seen.”

“ she must be your soulmate, ” she said patting his shoulder.

They packed up their gear and rushed over for dinner with Bassam's family, who she also hadn’t seen in years, a real trip down memory lane. Their wedding was set for the end of the year, a 3 month period, Zhareefah’s on the other hand is next month…a woman close to God chooses to get to know her spouse after marriage. A saying of real honest love only being found after you get married, every other time spent with someone is merely wishful thinking, don’t give a man access to what is only permissible for him after marriage.
