Chapter 27

Lynne's death glare was one thing but being the center of attention was another, in other circumstances being the center of attention is a great thing. You're beloved by all but for me being the star in the room means you got guns upon guns aimed at you and ready to fire, not to mention the fact that some of those guns are from your supposed to be allies.

On the other side guarding the door was the last batch of security guards, only a few of them were left and they look Exhausted. Suites ragged and disheveled, some bleeding out from the wounds they attained and could only brush it aside to fulfill their jobs.

A man taller than me stepped forward, unlike the others he was holding no gun but he strode with confidence not batting an eye to the looming danger. Just by looking you can easily point out that he was of higher rank, a decorative pin with the manors sigma plastered on his lapel, in closer inspection, it was a small shield with 2 griffins facing each other. His blond hair was tied back into a small bun but was slightly falling apart and made him look even more disheveled than it already is but you can still sense the aura of authority around him.

He stopped a few meters from us, with a stoic expression arm stretched forward.

The same gesture you do when you coax a puppy to come to you.

"Sir please do come back, I strongly advise you to step aside so that you won't get caught in the crossfire." He said in Russian "The prime deputy minister is very worried about you so he ordered me to escort you to the bunker as soon as possible, just step aside and we'll finish this quickly."

The guy behind me chuckled before getting back on his feet, he stood behind me making me dread a little for my lack of height, and for the record, I was 5'3 but standing next to him made me feel small and vulnerable

'curse your 6'0 height' I grumbled under my breath

It took a long time before he could finally let out a word with a lopsided grin he uttered

"I don't give a rat's ass for what that old bastard says."

I gaped at his bravery, is this guy an idiot or something, to stand up against a person with high authority is like an instant death wish.

The sudden realization made me double-take, don't tell me this guy is.

The guy in front of us look bewildered for a moment which earned another chuckle from behind me

"Tell him to shove his worry up" His words suddenly stopped

I turned around to see what happened to him, only to see two drones hovering outside of the window panes.

My eyes widen

'what is it doing here?' I mentally thought.

At first, it just floated there but with a few beeps, both whirled to life guns locked and loaded before I could even react at the slightest, I was grabbed by my collar and hurled towards the wall.

It took only a few minutes for the rapid firing to commence, my hands instantly covered my ears, eyes closed and body curled up to the wall. Around me, the sound of glass breaking, screams, and gunshots could be heard making me curl up more.

"Stop," I mumbled quietly under my breath, tightening my hold on my coat, wrinkling the fabric in the process but it didn't matter to me at this moment. No, I was too busy grounding myself in reality.

'just make it stop'

My wish was heard as It only took a heartbeat before the firing stopped, gun powder wafted through the afternoon breeze mixed with the stench of blood, like the smell of old rusty pipes but stronger. Slowly uncurling from my fatal position, I started getting my bearings back, and when I came to; There was a body leaning against mine. Opening my eyes at the sudden skin-to-skin contact, only to see the boy from earlier. I sat there doubt struck both eyes wide from disbelief, the boy was kneeling in front of me. One arm to the wall just above my head to the left while his other hand to my right, he was leaning towards me like he was using his body as a shield to protect me like a cocoon. His head was just above my shoulder making me shiver as I felt his breath on my neck.

'too close.'

My heartbeat picked up, it was like we were in our little world again.

Only his shallow breathing and my racing heart fill up the space.

why does this keep happening, I'm always uneasy and jittery if someone gets close or touches me like there's a looming dread hovering if I commence physical interaction but why is it with him that all seem to fade away.

Wait this got to have some logical explanation, did I catch a cold or disease for me to be this way.

No that's not possible I never get sick but why the hell am I heating up, cheeks reddening and heart accelerating, and not to mention the imaginary knot twisting inside my guts.

My internal crisis was cut short when the weight above me got grabbed by the collar and hoisted up to his feet, a barrel of a gun pointed to his forehead. The Sight of the gun made me scramble to my feet, pushing my thoughts aside for another time, I leaped to the boy's rescue.

The guy who was holding him was the same guy I saw in the meeting yesterday, he was the squad leader and right now he was not amused at my intervention. Face scrunched up and lips in a sneer, he glared at me before tightening his grip on the collar.

He radiated an aura to not be meddled with but I stubbornly went through it, gulping I started to voice out my thoughts.

"Don't you dare shoot him!" I exclaimed.

He look at me bewildered at my sudden threat.

"Don't tell me you feel a sense of justice for him just because he saved you." I heard Lynne say with a 'are you kidding me look' on her face before gesturing to Mr.grumpy to get it on with.

I fretted

"Didn't you hear what the ringleader said earlier?" I said pointing to the mangled body at the side "he has significant importance to their boss, he can still be of use."

Ok let me get this straight I'm not defending him or anything, yeah he may have saved my life back there but it was just because I was frozen on the spot and things escalated. It's also not because he has a pretty face that showcases his dimple when he smiles or those mesmerizing almond brown eyes with a splash of green which I later noticed in our second encounter. No, it's none of those things it's just because I'm ...curious.

Yes, that's the right word for it, curious, I am curious about how the hell he got access to the control room in the first place which can only be accessed by a few selected personnel.

"His a pet so what, there's not much use for pets." The short guy retorted cocking his gun "let's kill him here and be done with it."

Think Midnight, think.

How can you keep this bastard from killing the only person who can answer your questions, I stood there brainstorming possibilities while everyone in the room stared at me.

Wait the file, the report of this whole mission, yes that's it.

I mentally groaned

'How the hell did I miss that?!'

"In the file report, it states that the deputy prime minister has a son of my age." I looked at the drone behind Lynne for confirmation, the thing beeped and in a bored tone Mr. Blue answers

"The low-level noob is right, it's on the quest guidelines." He confirmed before doing a double-take "wait you didn't read the guidelines of the quest, going headfirst to a level SS dungeon without any prior information is a great trait in getting you and your party killed ."

I breathe out a sigh of relief brushing off the added nonsense, turning back to Mr. grumpy

"See." I say in an 'I told you so' tone "you can put him down now."

He sneered turning to Lynne for orders, who just nodded in return. The hot-headed short stack lets the mysterious guy go without any objections, withdrawing his gun as he does so.

The brunet could only sigh in I guess annoyance, straightening his collar and tie again. He looks almost kind of annoyed like this is the norm for him, almond eyes rolling in frustration and anger, the light I saw in them earlier diminishes into a void less pit of nothingness.

A lot of shuffling could be heard in the background along with Lynne's booming voice

"All units engage, we still have a mission to complete."

The command was then executed armed personnel ventured towards the door at the end of the hallway, not minding the bodies that lay in front of it. The smell of metal drafted through the air which I oddly find endearing, the mangled bodies splattered on the ground not so much. I've been in this world for a year now but I can never seem to get used to this kind of thing, well you can't blame me for each blood bath gets worse and worse than the last.

The deputy's son was grabbed by Mr. grumpy leading him to the group who could only glare at his captor, the black-haired cocked his gun to his side, a warning to not step out of line.

Me having already left my post and dammed for a scolding later by Lynne no doubt is left with one thing and one thing only,

I decided to tag along.
