They had arrived the day before. The farewell with Captain Ioannidis and his crew, with whom they had shared moments of tension and danger but also of camaraderie and joy, had been touching.

Alain Garnier and Djamba had left Gabon eighteen months before and had traveled by river, road and rail through the entire width of African from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean, and after the women had joined them all along the maritime contour of the continent from Zanzibar back to the starting point. Throughout their journey they had encircled the entire southern half of the Dark Continent, definitely an experience that few men could match at that time.
