Chapter 14
In a place of the ample meadow the Chancellor Berengar Monferrier was already waiting next to several policemen.
"Unfortunately it is Aulric without a doubt." He said without preamble. "We've called some family members who live in the countryside.”
The newcomers approached the perimeter of yellow tape marked by the Gendarmerie around the still-smoking ashes. Trencavel was authorized to transpose the environment and to approach the remains. He stood motionless for a moment in which he was evidently raising a prayer for his murdered friend. Then he returned with the rest and in his face the pain had given way to a hard gesture of iron determination.
"I saw that gesture on his face earlier when we buried another of our murdered brothers.” Bertran said in a whisper to the young man. “If I were the murderer or the murderers in this case I would not be calm. They have earned a ruthless enemy.”
