Do Not Waver

Rumble! rumble! rumble!

"Push you maggots! get the battering ram to that gate and break it open!" yelled an orc officer.

With casualties getting heavier on the orcs army as their forces are being bombarded by both stones and arrows. The ladders that was put up are getting pushed off the city wall in minutes. Those that was able to latched on and have successfully created a foothold was instantly got targeted by the humans elite soldiers. Their only way now is to destroy the city gate and storm those inside.

Luckily, they came prepared to allow the battering ram to move forward unhindered so far. Not a single stone or arrows could be seen around it.

- Honor tribe central city wall -

"Aim at that battering ram! take it down!" commanded Gerald.

"But sir! theirs people on top of it! they seem to still be alive."

Remaining silent, Gerald walked closer to the wall edge and raise his bow before taking aim. Looking at one of the individuals screaming for help on top of the battering ram. He released the arrow between his fingers.

Whoosh! Puchi!

Blood flows as the arrow penetrated the heart, killing that person instantly.

Turning around to face the troops, Gerald said "do not waver! for these people are already dead the moment they was captured by the orcs! If we let the orcs ram the gate freely then it won't take long before we are overrun! now take down that battering ram!"

Gritting there teeth, everyone begin to target the battering ram because in a way they know that what Gerald said is true. The city can be safeguarded by defending the high walls but if the gate is taken down then all of the orcs will rush in. With their manpower, it is impossible to stop the orcs in large numbers at the same time.

Soon, stones and arrows descend from the sky straight at the battering ram.

Thud! thud! thud!

Sounds of arrows hitting the hard wood surface of the ram roof rang out with only a few managed to reach its target.

Boom! Boom! boom!

Loud explosive noises could be heard once the round shape stone made contact with the ground. Sending countless small fragments at high speed in all directions. The unlucky ones died almost instantly after being pierced through, destroying their body from the inside.

Surprised by the turn of events, the orc officer begin to hasten the speed.

"Dammit! who knew these scums could be so heartless towards their own people! Push faster!"

There's nothing they could do in this situation except for pressing forward. Turning their backs to the enemy now is nothing short of suicide. Putting all the strength into there arms and legs, their speed multiple by many times.

Their efforts paid off but not without sacrifices as half of their original number of fifty orcs remains after reaching the gate. While the battering ram is badly damaged and on its last leg. Without wasting time, the orcs started to ram the gate vigorously.

"Pull!"

Bang!

"Pull!"

Bang!

Seeing that the gate is being attacked, Gerald curse the orc ancestors. Turning toward a nearby soldier, he said "bring the animal fat sack here now!"

"Yes general!"

"I didn't expect to use it this early into the battle..."

Ten minutes after the soldier left, a foothold have been created by the orcs on top of the city wall.

Thunderous roars from the orcs travel throughout the battlefield as they wave the flag to signal that an opening is set up. Seconds later, a large group of orcs converge towards that ladder. While those on top created a protective barrier around it.

Noticing this, Gerald give a command for the guardsmen to eliminate it right away. Soldiers such as the guardsmen and pike infantry who are on par if not stronger then the orcs is set as the elite force. Their only task which is also the hardest are to crush those foothold.

A few minutes later, the soldier returned with many brown sacks tied to short ropes around his body. Taking those sacks from the soldier, Gerald distribution it to a few others before saying "on my signal, throw the animal fat down on that battering ram and light them up."

"Understood!"

"Ready....NOW!"

Whoosh! Splash!

Holding onto the bow, Gerald took an arrow and light the arrow tip on fire, took aim, and release. The moment that both fire and animal fat meet. An inferno was ignited with the orcs being swipe up by the flame.

"AHHHH!"

"Fuannndd!"

Witnessing the collapse of their battering ram and the futile efforts of taking the wall. The horns of retreat was sounded from the orcs war camp. Hearing the orders to retreat, the orcs slowly move back with their eyes on the city wall. Those with shields cover the retreat of everyone else.

With the orcs retreating, loud cheering echoes throughout the city.

"We did it! the orcs are retreating!"

"There's a chance of complete victory after all!"

"It's only the first day but I'm already feeling hopeful."

- Orcs war camp -

"God dammit!! can anyone tell me how did a bunch of insects manage to defeat us?" said thor.

Eyeing everyone inside the tent, he is waiting for a satisfying reason for this failure. But how can all of them not knowing that this is all a facade to put the blame on someone else. They also can't naturally jump out and say that our failure in today battle is your fault either. Unless they no longer want to survive and truly seek out death.

Which is why, silence is the most important thing to do in this situation.

A sneer appears on thor face as he knew that these old foxes won't fall for his tricks so easily.

Deciding to change the subject, thor said, "I want those siege towers done by tomorrow. Make the one responsible to work quickly."

"Understood!"

"By the way, put the rest of those humans we captured in front of the siege towers."
