Poem 7

I stumbled out of the

Room, door hardly

Creaking as silent

Pawsteps slipped out.

The hallway was mostly

Bare, save for another

Human with paper-white

Skin and turquoise eyes.

Oddly enough, this human

Bore markings on his face,

As if to imply he were more

Than just an average human.

His sight flicked to my form

As I rounded the corner, eyes

Narrowing at my slight limp.

The human was quick to

Close the distance between

Us, his cool gaze calculating.

"Why are you limping,

Did something happen?"

I took a feeble step back,

Holding my injured paw

Close to my chest in quiet

Retaliation, eyes a mistrusting

Glower at the nearing human.

My ears flattened as

He paused in his tracks.

...

He put his palms up.

"I'm not going to

Harm you, alright?

I just want to take

A look at your paw."

The air hung still

Around us for a

Brief moment, the

Tension thicker than

A large oil spill.

He stood still,

Hesitation laced

Through his gaze.

I crept forward slowly,

Weary bones hollow

And thrumming with

Hastily steeled nerves.

My shoulders reeled

Back, taut and stiff.

He remained how he

Was, quiet and unmoving.

...

"There appears to be

Broken glass shards

Stuck in your paw."

He blinked once.

"I'll go tell the others,

Just stay here, alright?"

Turquoise eyes darted

Away from mine, as he

Stood and walked away.

I strayed behind him,

Keeping on his trail.

...

I watched in silence

As he spoke in that

Cryptic tongue, the

Other humans quiet

As they listened.

Some of them began

To stare at me, or

Rather my sore paw.

The fur on the back

Of my neck bristled.

The human with pale,

Olive green eyes left

Before returning mere

Moments later with

A white cloth tucked

Between her fingertips.

"Here, you may use this."

As she opened her palm,

A figure rushed in and

Took the long cloth before

Walking up to me with it.

"Here, I'll do it."

I recognised his dusty

Eyes and baritone voice.

He reached out with

A steady, open palm.

The sign of trust.

I revealed my sore paw,

Rough skin torn and red.

The others watched in

Mute silence as he

Healed my old injury,

Shock evident in their

Bleeding, earnest eyes.
