Emily Williams, a girl who moves to Little Britain in Lancaster County, befriends an Amish girl, Elizabeth Beiler. They are best friends for the few years that she is in Little Britain, until Emily leaves and goes back to her hometown, Newark, New Jersey. She returns years later and meets Elizabeth, once again.
Reveal Spoiler
There is a mysterious romanticized charm regarding the Amish way of life. Like they have something in their simplicity that we have lost in our hustle and bustle. There is also a longing in each of us to find a friend and have a sense of belonging, purpose, and acceptance. The emotional intelligence and introspective nature of a teenage girl far surpasses that of her male counterpart. Britney Peters takes all three of these complex realities and merges them together to create one story. I know she will tweak some details for better flow before finished. What I recognize here is the foundation she has started. She is venturing down a challenging path to relay a story of two teenage girls becoming friends from two different cultures. I applaud her bravery in writing a piece of such complex components at the age of 17. I don’t see what I’ve read as a book but a series of books with growing character development just as Britney matures and grows in her own life.
