"If you press the accelerator lightly, you'll go a little faster, okay?" I told the kids. Lily was first up driving. She was doing a mighty fine job maneuvering the streets, cars, and pedestrians.
"Like this?" she asked.
I looked over at her feet and back up to the road. "Yeah, that's perfect!"
While my granddaughter and I were having the time of our lives, the lethargic ape in the backseat groaned, "You're going, like, six miles per hour; can't you go any faster? The speed limit is forty-five, by the way..." Vincent was taking up all of the seats in the back by laying down on all of them with his arm on his face.
Lily answered back shyly in a sweet voice, "I-I'm sorry, I a little frightened by all of this."
Why was she apologizing? "Lily, don't apologize to this oaf! Vincent get the hell up and sit properly, I don't want to pay a fine because of you!"
"Sheesh," he sat straight this time and leaned on the side window, "can't I drive?"
"Absolutely n-"
"Sure!" Lily cut in. I looked at her in complete shock.
"You can't let him drive!"
"Why not?" she asked back.
I stuttered for words, "Because...because...he..." Shit.
Vincent leaned between us and said, "I would gladly take the chance!" Lily and he switched places when she parked at a nearby lot. When he got comfortable with his seat, he said, "What is this smell?"
Lily commentated from the back, "Do you like it? It's my perfume!"
He scrunched his nose and furrowed his eyebrows. He looked just like Micheal; well, he even acted just like him. "I think it's dis-," I gave him a cold glare and tapped my pocket before he finished, "Dynamic! I think it's dynamic!" His neck started to sweat.
"What's that supposed to mean?" she called out from the backseat.
"Just take the compliment, will you?!" Lily leaned back in her seat with a confused expression. When she couldn't see him, he gave me a middle finger and proceed to ask, "How am I supposed to drive this thing?"
"You don't know how to drive?!" I was vexed. "Didn't you say you were a get-away-driver?"
"A get-away-driver?" Lily asked from the back. I could see her twirling her blonde hair through the rear-view mirror.
I quickly corrected myself, "I meant go-cart-driver! You know, at the fairs and such?!" She nodded her head and looked the other way.
Vincent looked at me with a smug smile and said, "Smooth."
"Fuck you!" I snarled. I raised my tone back to my normal level and instructed him about the key components that he should know. "Aren't you supposed to know all of this?"
He looked at me and smiled. "I only did one of those," he plunged to a whisper, "get-away-driver gigs."
"What?!"
"I also got caught."
"How?! Didn't they at least teach you how to drive?"
He flushed red and said, "I panicked and forgot where to put the keys."
I stared at him. Was he really that stupid? "Hey, maybe you shouldn't drive right now," I said slowly. I was really concerned for everyone's lives in this car.
He turned the key to the engine and kicked the throttle. "Nope! Too late! I wanna drive this thing!"
*Vrooom* The red-tinted car raced across the free lanes dodging cars, trucks, and police left and right. "Vincent! Slow the fuck down!" I roared.
"Whooohoooo!" he screamed. I looked at the speed. Crossing the eighties, the numbers were racking to breaking one hundred!
"AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!" a shrill screech could be heard from the back. Lily! "Vincent, you have to slow down!" she screamed.
The car still wasn't slowing down. I could see us passing by everything outside the window in lightspeed. Everything was a blur and nothing was distinct. I looked back at the speedometer. It was showing only eighty-six? This thing was sure broken! "Didn't you hear her?! Slow the FUCK DOWN!!!" I yelled in his ear.
He looked at me with calm eyes and said, "I would love to, boss, but...the brake isn't pushing in."
"What does that even mean?" Lily screamed.
"It means that the brake isn't working."
"Are we going to die?!" she shrieked.
Vincent calmly answered, "Maybe."
"What do we do?!" I looked back at Lily and she was crying. I asked him again, "What can we do?!"
He scratched his head and said, "Well, we could think about all the regrets we have? Or maybe we could try telling each other some secrets? Or we could find some answers."
I looked at him and growled, "You bastard." I took out a small pen and pressed it against the passenger seat window. *Crack* The glass shattered.
Vincent leaned back on his seat and exclaimed, "Surprise!" Sunlight streamed in, and we were still at the same lot where Lily had parked the car. "Get pranked!"
Lily stopped crying and looked out the window. "How did you do that?"
"Let's just say that I know a few things about cars," I looked at him with murderous intent as he said that, "Okay! There was a button that said change scenery, I didn't know that this would happen!"
"Then, why didn't you tell us, you dumbfuck?!" I shouted.
"I don't know? 'Cause, it was funny?"
I dropped my head in my hands and said, "We're going back home."
"Can I drive?" he asked. I slowly turned my face around to look at him. His stupid smile was burning a hole in my heart. "Can I, though? I didn't drive yet!"
"Back. Seat. Now."
"I promise I won't do what...just happened."
"If you don't want to be left here to walk back, then I suggest that you move your ass." He unbuckled his seatbelt and sat next to Lily in the back. Is this what a true teen was like? I hope to hell that I was wrong.
