Chapter 5

It had been a month since Giovanni and I had gotten married and I had moved to Sicily. All had been well, he and I had grown closer, but we still hadn't been intimate with each other. But I suppose it was best not to rush into things. I wanted this marriage to work for all involved.

I regularly speak to my family, they are all well. My father was excited about a new business deal which meant he would start a new project developing and building a new strain of hotels, restaurants and corporate buildings in Germany, my mother had been busy trying to help her best friends daughter and Liam get together, unknowingly that Emma and Liam were indeed together! The two of them decided not to tell our mothers yet as they found their attempts funny, and so did I to be honest with you.

Francesca and I had also developed an amazing relationship. I think I could finally say I had a real friend out here. She introduced me to Sofia and she is the most cutest and loving little girl I have ever met. Giovanni was there when I first met her, and seeing the way he was around her made my heart melt. He was someone who when they loved, they loved hard. And I loved that about him.

I also finally spent some time with his mother, Carmela. She had treated me like her own daughter and said I was like the daughter she never had. Giovanni also has a younger brother, Valentino. He was 16 and was the spitting imagine of Giovanni. They didn't talk much about Alessandro and what happened to him, neither did they talk much about their father. But all I know is that they both had died. Alessandro the more recent one.

I am right in saying I've started to feel at home here. But I also think I am starting to fall for Giovanni, I just don't know if he felt the same.

Today Francesca had come over to our home, and we was going to have a spa day. Sofia was with her grandparents for the day, and Giovanni and Giancarlo had gone out for business, so it was just us girls today.

"How did Giancarlo and Giovanni meet?" I asked Francesca as we both relaxed on massage tables and got massages.

"They've known each other forever, their cousins actually. I thought you knew," she said as she turned her head and looked at me.

"Francesca, how did Alessandro die?"

I watched as her body tensed quickly then relaxed again, "that's something Giovanni should tell you, honey." I guess she was right, it was his brother after all, "but anyways, have you and Giovanni, you know..." she asked and wiggled her eyebrows.

I laughed and blushed, "no not yet."

"Well there's no rush right?" I simply just replied humming my voice and relaxed into my massage.

We spent the rest of the day talking and enjoying ourselves until Francesca had to leave to pick up Sofia.

I had nothing else to do so I decided to take a nap.

When I woke up, I looked out the window to find the sun starting to set and then to the clock on the bedside table. 7:57 pm.

Wow I slept longer than I thought. I had forgotten Giovanni had been away all day, and I wondered if he'd be back by now, but I doubt he would. He seemed to have been in a rush when he left this morning.

I decided to throw on some clothes quickly and go see if he was home.

"Loretta, is Giovanni home?" I asked the maid feeling like a desperate wife who needed her husband all the time.

"He should be in his office, but he said he didn't want to be disturbed, Mrs Lombardo." I smiled and ignored the fact that she said he didn't want to be disturbed and skipped down to where he would be. I opened the door and walked in without knocking. But nobody was inside. As I walked in I inhaled the strong scent of him and looked around. On his desk there was a photo framed of him and I on our wedding day and I smiled at the memory. I was so scared to be married, but now I don't think I'd take it back. Next to it was an envelope that was already opened, and being the nosy person I am, I decided to see what was in the envelope addressed to Giovanni Lombardo. But I shouldn't have.

In the envelope resided one single note:

'I am coming for you and your pretty new bride. Watch your back, blood will be spilled.'

Blood will be spilled?

I quickly put the note back in the envelope and left his office, suddenly hearing muffled screams from the room at the end of the hall. I opened the door quietly and found stone stairs to walk down. Luckily was wearing socks so no one could hear me - I hoped so anyway.

"Do you think it's okay to threaten my wife!" I heard Giovanni shout from down below.

"You will all get what is coming for you," someone replied with a different accent. I walked further down so I could see what was going on. Giovanni, Giancarlo, Emiliano, Francesco, Andrea, and Lorenzo along with a few other men I did not recognise, all stood around the stranger man who was bleeding from his face a lot. His face was beaten and his eyes looked swollen. I was scared now, why was Giovanni doing this? The floors had been covered in plastic and it made a sound when anyone moved.

"Kill me. Alexei is coming for you and will end you and your power. In fact he wants to take your wife for himself." My breathing had become heavier by now, how was I involved in this. Giovanni punched the man once more and grabbed him by the front of his shirt, looking him dead in the eye. His body was shaking with anger, and his bloody fists seemed to want to do more that punch.

"I promise you, the only time he will go near my wife is when he is begging for mercy at her feet. Do you hear me?" He shouted. Authority and power radiated off him, and the boys just laughed at the man who was powerless in this situation.

Andrea walked up to Giovanni and handed him a black metal cylinder thing, "would you like to do the honours, boss?" He said happily and smiling an evil grin. Giovanni took the thing from Andrea's hand and smiled back.

"You don't have to ask me twice." Suddenly, he pulled something from his back. A gun. At this point I was shaking in fear and too scared to move. I had placed a hand over my mouth and wanted to run but my legs couldn't. It was like they had sunk into the stone. "Any last words?" Giovanni said as screwed the thing onto the gun. It must have been a silencer.

I couldn't understand what the man had said as it sounded like he spoke Russian and I didn't know how to speak that, but it didn't sound good.

"Very well then. Tell your boss I said hello." All the men laughed and within a second the gun had gone off. I let out a scream and all eyes turned to me, Giovanni's head turned faster than I knew it ever could.

"Fuck, Evelina." He groaned as I suddenly fell forward and my world went black.

GIOVANNI'S POV

I watched my wife silently as she lay in the bed sleeping quietly after she had walked in on me shooting a man. I held an ice pack to her head and didn't take my eyes off her. I could already tell she was going to be scared and confused, but she wasn't supposed to find out this way. Today we had shared something intimate, but now I was pissed because that would all be ruined. If she would've just stayed in the room and not come looking for me this wouldn't have happened. But maybe I was wrong for not telling her straight away, I couldn't blame this on her.

"Giancarlo, I need Francesca to come over. I don't think Evelina will want to speak to me." I said to my friend and my second in command, who was leaning against the wall on his phone.

"Already on it, Gio." I nodded and turned my attention back to my wife.

I was going to have to tell her now, sooner than I thought. Her life was in danger.

And she had to know I was the Sicilian Mafia Boss. One of the most feared crime organisation in the world.
