CHAPTER THIRTEEN

She looked at me with fear in her eyes and tears. I cut her tethers and heaved her on my shoulders. The suppleness of her body was endearing and for the first time in my life, my stomach felt empty and my body yearned for a woman. I managed to heave her up the cliff and brought her to the tent, the other men were wide awake, they had heard the gun shots and had found out that I was conspicuously missing.

Thank Heavens you are safe, the captain said relieved

I smiled and lay the girl on a mat which Smith had produced from the tent. The girl was beautiful but very weak. She closed her eyes and she soon fell asleep, then I told my friends what happened from first to last and the captain was especially enthralled by my bravery.

So what do you want to do with the girl? Anderson asked.

Take her to her family, I answered curtly.

Are you mad? Anderson asked enraged

Of course not, I answered obviously startled.
